Well Scarmaker here is the answer to your question:

    Old Gods

The Old Gods were malevolent deities who ruled Azeroth in the ancient past before they and their Elemental Lieutenants were defeated by the Titans.

    History
Long ago, Azeroth was a primordial world filled with the hostile elemental servants of the Old Gods. When the Titans visited the world in their quest to bring order the universe, they fought first against the Old Gods' lieutenants, Ragnaros the Firelord, Therazane the Stonemother, Al'Akir the Windlord, and Neptulon the Tidehunter, then against the Old Gods themselves. Soon, the Titans defeated the Old Gods and set about the long process of forming the lands and seas of Azeroth.

Note: It is suspected that The Old Gods are partially based on the legends of the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods, creations from the legend of Cthulhu written by H.P. Lovecraft.

    The Five
The Master's Glaive contains a huge fossil, the remains of an Old God.Of the five initial Old Gods, one was slain; its remains can be seen at the Master's Glaive in Darkshore. Three of the Gods were imprisoned beneath the earth. The fifth God, C'Thun, was defeated in Silithus in a battle which also resulted in the defeat of a Titan. C'Thun was believed to have been permanently defeated, but reemerged as the driving force behind the Qiraji.

    The Three
The three Gods imprisoned beneath the earth continued to exert their will, though in limited ways.

They corrupted the great benevolent Dragon Aspect Neltharion, to create for them the extremely powerful Demon Soul, which they were to have Sargeras use to unintentionally set them free. The Demon Soul was taken from Neltharion by Malfurion, then taken from him by Illidan and put in the Sargeras-summoning matrix, then taken back from ther by Neltharion, who shortly thereafter was struck away by the Old Gods, who wished to have the summoning completed. Malfurion picked up the Demon Soul after Neltharion dropped it, and used it (in conjunction with Illidan) to prevent Sargeras' entry. It was then given to the dragons, stolen by Nekros ten-thousand years later, taken back by the dragons, and then destroyed.
They corrupted some of the Highborne of the Night Elves, and used them to lure the Burning Legion to Azeroth. Many of the Highborne were transformed into the Naga, who serve the Old Gods still.
They invaded Nozdormu's realm and managed to open a rift in time, that, as they had planned, tossed some beings back through time, beings that would change the way the war of the ancients took place, and give Sargeras a new chance to enter the world, and therefore them a new chance to set themselves free. Their plans were although again crushed by the very same Malfurion Stormrage.
    C'Thun
C'Thun's physical formC'Thun is the only one of the Old Gods to be named so far, having receieved that name from his servants, the Qiraji. He is trapped deep beneath the ruined temples of Ahn'Qiraj, where he has exerted his will for thousands of years over the Qiraji, who in turn command the Silithid.

C'Thun is the final boss in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. Players will get to kill him, and doing so was the most difficult thing to do in the game until the Naxxramas instance was made available.

    The Dead One
One of the Old Gods was killed by the Titans. Its remains can be found in Darkshore.

The Number of Old Gods Imprisoned
There are various sources as to the number of Old Gods imprisoned:

The Warcraft III manual states that five Old Gods were chained beneath the world.
According to the War of the Ancients Trilogy, there are three Old Gods still living, imprisoned and chained by the Titans deep beneath the surface of Azeroth.
According to The Old Gods and the Ordering of Azeroth, four Old Gods were imprisoned beneath the world. This could perhaps be reconciled with the War of the Ancients Trilogy if it were taken to include the fallen C'Thun in the count of the imprisoned Gods.
    _____________

    Ragnaros

    Ragnaros the Firelord
    Gender Male
    Race Elemental
    Character class Not Applicable
    Affiliation Old Gods
    Occupation Firelord
    Status Slumbering within Molten Core
    Relatives Several elemental offspring

The Fire god and his brethren once held sway over the entire world. As a servant of the Old Gods, he fought against the Titans for domination over the planet. The victorious Titans banished him and his brethren to the Elemental Plane - there to remain imprisoned until the end of time.

It was then and there that the brothers turned on each other. For five millennia a battle was fought at the core of this world.

It was during the Elemental Sundering that Ragnaros sought to consume Thunderaan, Prince of Air. Thunderaan fell, utterly defeated. The Firelord feasted upon the essence of Thunderaan, but was unable to consume him entirely.

In the center of a vast lake of fire in the Elemental Plane stands Sulfuron Keep, the home of Ragnaros. Until comparatively recently, he ruled his underground land with a molten iron fist.

Three hundred years ago, the ambitious and ruthless Dark Iron Clan initiated a war against their dwarven brethren, the Bronzebeard Clan and Wildhammer Clan. During this War of the Three Hammers, the Dark Iron Dwarf leader named Thaurissan lay siege to the Wildhammers' capital city of Grim Batol, destroying it. Despite this victory, the united Wildhammers and Bronzebeards were ultimately able to push the Dark Iron dwarves back to Blackrock Mountain. Thaurissan, seeking to summon a supernatural minion that would turn the tide of the war back to his favor, called upon the ancient powers sleeping beneath the world. To Thaurissan's surprise, and ultimately his doom, the creature that emerged was more terrible than any nightmare he could have imagined.

Now, freed by Thaurissan's call, Ragnaros erupted into being once again. Ragnaros' apocalyptic rebirth into Azeroth shattered the Blackrock Mountain and created a raging volcano at the center of the devastation. The volcano, known as Blackrock Spire, was bordered by what is now known as the Searing Gorge, to the north, and the Burning Steppes, to the south. Though Thaurissan was killed by the forces he had unleashed, his surviving Dark Iron Clan brethren were ultimately enslaved by Ragnaros and his elementals. Many Dark Iron dwarves remain within the lower areas of the mountain, especially Blackrock Depths, toiling away at the behest of Ragnaros and the Firelord's lieutenants. The Bronzebeards and Wildhammers, however, remain free.

Witnessing the horrific devastation and the fires spreading across the southern mountains, the Bronzebeards' King Madoran and Wildhammers' King Khardros halted their armies and hastily turned back towards their kingdoms, unwilling to face the awesome wrath of Ragnaros.

Now he lies at the bottom of that volcano on Azeroth, striving to find a way home, as well as to gather his strength once again so he can burn away Azeroth and take it for his own. Meanwhile, in Sulfuron Keep and elsewhere across the Firelands, his elemental princes battle constantly for dominance.

He and his dwarven minions took control of the Blackrock mountain's volcanic depths and made war on the orcs in the Upper Blackrock Spire, which served as the seat of power for Nefarian the Black Dragon. Ragnaros has uncovered the secret to creating life from stone and plans to build an army of unstoppable golems to aid him in conquering the whole of Blackrock Mountain.

    Etymology/inspiration
Ragnaros' name is from Ragnarök(Ragnarok), the end of the world in Norse mythology, but he seems to be based on the leader of the Fire giants, Surt. This battle would be fought between the gods (the Æsir and the Vanir), and the jotuns (the giants): the hrímþursar (frost giants) and the eldjotnar (fire giants, led by Surtr), together with Loki and his children.

    Quotes
    Ragnaros Summoning talk:
Majordomo Executus: Behold Ragnaros, the Firelord! He who was ancient when this world was young! Bow before him, mortals! Bow before your ending!
Ragnaros: TOO SOON! YOU HAVE AWAKENED ME TOO SOON, EXECUTUS! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS INTRUSION?
Majordomo Executus: These mortal infidels, my lord! They have invaded your sanctum, and seek to steal your secrets!
Ragnaros: FOOL! YOU ALLOWED THESE INSECTS TO RUN RAMPANT THROUGH THE HALLOWED CORE, AND NOW YOU LEAD THEM TO MY VERY LAIR? YOU HAVE FAILED ME, EXECUTUS! JUSTICE SHALL BE MET, INDEED!
Ragnaros: NOW FOR YOU, INSECTS. BOLDY YOU SOUGHT THE POWER OF RAGNAROS! NOW YOU SHALL SEE IT FIRSTHAND!
DIE, INSECT! (When he kills the player he has aggro on)
BY FIRE BE PURGED! (Ranged knockback)
TASTE THE FLAMES OF SULFURON! (Melee knockback)
COME FORTH, MY SERVANTS! DEFEND YOUR MASTER! (Summoning Sons of Flame)

    Archimonde the Defiler

Archimonde the Defiler was the left hand of the fallen titan, Sargeras. Archimonde was one of the greatest and darkest of the Eredar. His ruthless and cunning personality quickly earned him station and power within the Eredar ranks, until finally he was one of the first among them.

    Origin

25,000 years ago, Archimonde was one of the three leaders (the others being Kil'jaeden and Velen) of the Eredar homeworld of Argus contacted by Sargeras and offered immense power in exchange for his loyalty. Archimonde and Kil'jaeden readily accepted the offer, though Velen not only rejected it, but rebelled and fled Argus with his followers to become the Draenei.

    The War of the Ancients
Fifteen thousand years later, when Queen Azshara's reckless magics began to attract the attention of Sargeras, Archimonde and Mannoroth led the catastrophic, destructive invasion. With thousands of demonic servants in their wake, they poured through the portal beneath the Well of Eternity, and were let loose upon the ancient land of Kalimdor, razing every structure and spilling the blood of every creature they came across.

However, a young scholar, Malfurion Stormrage, gathered a small band of night elves, and, with the help of Cenarius' woodland allies and Alexstrasza's mighty dragon flights, they managed to beat back the demonic hordes, and, in a titanic battle, the portal became unstable and collapsed, sundering the world, and banishing Archimonde and his minions back into the burning pits of the Twisting Nether.

    The Second Invasion

Archimonde brooded for ten thousand years in the dark recesses of the Twisting Nether as they planned for a new invasion. His colleague, Kil'jaeden, found the means through Ner'zhul and, eventually, Gul'dan, on the world of Draenor. With Mannoroth's sinister help, the chieftains of the orcish Hordes were corrupted, and a bloodlust came over them that swept them into a tumultuous frenzy that engulfed their world. The orcs were to be the harbinger of the Legion's return, destroying all they beheld so that none could oppose the Legion. However, after the exodus into Azeroth and Draenor's eventual destruction, the Horde was defeated by the humans of former Arathor and their allies, and the orcs failed in their unholy mission.

However, an old tool was found that could once again be put to use. Ner'zhul, the dark shaman of the Shadowmoon Clan, was sent spiraling with his most faithful disciples into the Twisting Nether after attempting to find new worlds to control, and he was found by Kil'jaeden and the Burning Legion. Over time, he was transformed into the Lich King, an ethereal spirit that controlled the undead Scourge, a force so mighty, that it was expected to succeed where the Horde had failed.

    They exceeded expectations.

Archimonde, of course, was to command the Legion's invasion, but he needed the means of getting to Azeroth. A being with as much tremendous power as an Eredar needed more magic to summon than a simple Nathrezim, and he waited until finally he was contacted by Kel'Thuzad the Summoner, who, after stealing the Book of Medivh from Dalaran, began the lengthy summoning process. As he proceeded, the skies were split asunder, and mighty infernals and felhounds were brought to aid the Scourge. Finally, it was completed, and Archimonde was brought into the world of Azeroth.

    Wrath of the Legion

Archimonde first placed Tichondrius in charge of the Scourge, saying that there was no longer any need of the Lich King.

Then, Archimonde proceeded to single-handedly destroy the city of Dalaran using an ancient Eredar spell.

The invasion of Lordaeron continued unabated, the magics of Archimonde and Tichondrius summoning hordes of demonic followers, including the diabolical Pit Lord, Mannoroth. Together, they plowed through the nations of Lordaeron, devastating all they beheld. However, Tichondrius soon found that the orcs were missing. The Legion followed them across the sea, where they found not only the orcs but also, the vile night elves who had banished them millennia before. He even met Tyrande, the insolent leader of the Sentinels, who woke the ancient druids, and together, they battled the Legion once again.

The Defiler continued the invasion of Kalimdor ruthlessly, battling on two fronts, against the combined forces of the Alliance and the Horde was well as the Sentinels. The Legion suffered a setback when Tichondrius was killed by Illidan, but Archimonde seemed to have little concern, and placed his most loyal Dreadlord, Anetheron in joint command of the Scourge with Rage Winterchill, one of the few trustworthy liches.

    Defiler's End

Archimonde then proceeded with the original objective of the invasion. Under the orders of Kil'jaeden, the mighty demonlord carried out the invasion to attack the World Tree, Nordrassil. By draining the Tree's energies, not only would Archimonde gain untold power, his demonic Legion will also be able to literally tear the world apart. While Archimonde was following the plan proscribed by Sargeras and Kil'jaeden, in truth he desired the powers of the tree to gain godlike powers that could rival those of Sargeras and place him at the head of the Legion. But, Tyrande and Malfurion had allied with Thrall and Jaina Proudmoore, and Archimonde's ascent up Mount Hyjal was antagonizingly slow, being forced to destroy every successive base with the help of Azgalor (Mannoroth's successor as leader of the Pit Lords) Rage Winterchill and Anetheron.

With his ascension progressing slowly but surely, Archimonde didn't notice the ancestral spirits that were amassing at the base of the World Tree. And as he slaughtered the mortals and their bases, he went heedlessly to the Tree, and began to climb it to claim his power, completely unaware of the trap that Malfurion had set for him. All he knew was that as he neared the Tree, he was growing in size and power, and he was resolved that nothing would stop him.

As Archimonde climbed, Malfurion raised the Horn of Cenarius and called to the ancestral guardians. They rose from the forest and amassed around Archimonde. They fell upon him, detonating in a massive explosion that destroyed the demon warlock and incinerated the forests around the World Tree; nature herself would not allow his defilement to occur.

Illidan's role in the fall of Archimonde
It is widely believed that Illidan, in consuming the Skull of Gul'dan, assured the defeat of Archimonde, as was mentioned by Kil'jaeden the Deceiver. While it is true that Illidan did aid the night elves for a time, Archimonde would likely still have fallen with or without the half-demon's aid. As stated by Malfurion Stormrage, Archimonde's fall was due his "overconfidence" in his "victory". In thinking that none left alive were able to stand against him, he let his guard down as he approach the World Tree. As a result, instead of taking whatever precautionary measures he should have, he waltzed straight up next to the Tree, where its primal fury could deal the most damage. It should be noted that this, and not the part of Illidan, caused Archimonde's death at the end of the war. However, one can also say that Illidan had helped secure victory by removing Tichondrius from the equation- the Darkener might have seen the trap that Archimonde missed. Or it is simply that with Tichondrius and his forces in the Felwood, the legion might have pushed through to Hyjal before Furion was able to secure his trap for the demon.

    Disturbing Rumors
Malfurion Stormrage has been trapped inside the Emerald Dream now for some time, and has reported in scarce visions to Remulos that there is a great, dark evil trying to consume the realm. Malfurion has remained there to combat the spreading malicious force, and it is whispered in hush tones and chilling reverence that the contagion is actually Archimonde. Some say that the demon had managed to use the power he gained from Nordrassil to leave his physical body and transport himself into the Emerald Dream.

Whether Archimonde is the cause for the Dream's slow decay remains to be seen.

    In World of Warcraft
The Burning Crusade expansion will open the Caverns of Time to players, and one of the events that players will have access to will be the Battle of Mount Hyjal. Some suspect that Archimonde will be a killable raid boss, but this is mere speculation as Blizzard has yet to elaborate on the players' involvement in the battle. If they remain true to the strategy model, players will more likely fight Archimonde's army of undead and demons until the final moments of the battle, when Archimonde will kill the players personally--seeing as how Archimonde doesn't die until he climbs the World Tree and is blown up by the Wisps, it's not really plausible that he can be killed. There could, however, be a situation where the players are not necessarily tasked with killing Archimonde, but rather hold him off long enough for the wisps to destroy him. Hardly an easy task.

Just like to show you guys this - At BlizzCon the head lore designer said of Illidan: "You don't so much "kill" him as much as you sorta get in his way." Possibly indicating that when his health is depleted (or close to depleted) he may simply escape battle.
