Oh yes, that. I was terrified when finding this for the first time. If only there was a way to get around the camera effect, if so I could see it closely in-game for myself.

You could use a machinima program to get a non-fixated camera to fly around with.

I always thought you would need to use an undead warlock character to be able to open it...silithis might hold some clues, considering it hasn't changed ever.

But isnt this thread what WoW used to be like? Adventerous and finding out epic - hidden - things in Azeroth?
Nowadays EVERYTHING has been discovered and you can find a simple guide to do whatever. Ranging from the smallest quests to the hardest boss fights. Unfortunately it is how it is, but I am happy that I got to play at a time where new discoveries were possible.
Too bad that it can't be opened.

I didn't read the full thread... but like... has anyone tried it in an unknown zone like outside of deepholm or deadmines?

THIS IS PURELY SPECULATION/ PERSONAL THEORY (although some seem to agree...)

Has no one else connected the Puzzle Box with Y'Shaarj and what's currently going on in Pandaria/Azeroth? Throw away your ideas of N'zoth and Vashj'ir and instead look to Pandaria, the powers of the water coming from the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, what might be UNDER Pandaria. Maybe this item's true meaning was never disclosed by GM's because it wasn't the right time for it yet. Maybe this is only the Puzzle Box of Yogg Saron because that's who the OWNER was before we found it (hence it's northrend location/nerubian type). Yogg doesn't/didn't continue to speak out after we defeated him in Ulduar... but Y'Shaarj, the Sha, continued to reach out to the still living after he was "killed" by the Titans long long ago....

So who was really whispering to you when you clicked your puzzle box? I think this item's true meaning and reason will be found out in 5.4....

Yes and without success, a gm also told us it can't be opened

And yes, stuff like that is awesome, that's why i love exploration, i could tell you stories behind every area i know. (and i'm actually doing it for my project )

for above : shas have nothing to do with the cthulhu mythos unfortunately (it's a chinese thing). The only things that come close are shoggoths but there's already a Soggoth the Slitherer - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft in WoW.
I don't see why this would have any link to the box. To me pandaria was just thrown there to please asian players, it bears no sense in the lore.

Nyarly, check out some of the "Know Your Lore" articles, some patch 5.4 insight, or read into the history of Pandaria a little and it will all make a lot more sense to you. Not coming at you in any negative way, but I can see why someone who doesn't know much about the history of Pandaria or why it was thrown in the game would think that. After doing so myself, it all became a lot more clear to me... especially after... *spoiler alert* in the 5.4 sound files the very last thing Y'Shaarj says is oddly enough "You will rest in Ny'alotha."

In an older Dev Q&A they had mentioned that (if i recall correctly) ~50% of MoP was completed by the time Cataclysm had shipped. They already knew where they were going with the story.

To me, everyone fell into Blizz's trap of thinking the Puzzle box was related to something in-game at the time. Instead of it being a foresight into what's coming...

You are very right, i'm a complete noob about everything pandaria related because i won't accept the fact that it has its place in the game.

To believe the lore written after the MoP announcement, i would have to see any info about pandaria in the lore BEFORE pandaria.
You won't find any map placing pandaria on azeroth prior to that expansion while we have maps with still unreleased zones like kul'tiras and nazjatar since vanilla.
No ingame quotes can be found about pandaria while npcs have quotes about absolutely everything.
There are no MoP test zones (like deadmine's secret, emerald dream, development) and nothing was datamined about pandaria before the xpac.
The war3 easter egg is an easter egg it bears no impact on warcraft's lore. There are also hydralisks in Warcraft3 and we all know azeroth and char aren't related in any way.

All this lead me to believe that MoP was just added to please those who were leaving WoW.
It might have been prepared since before cataclysm and a story has been written to "fit" in the lore but it's not a part of the original lore and still doesn't make any sense to me.

That being said, i would love to believe your story Try stuff and tell us what you find !

Standing under the Dark heart in the scenario, "Dark Heart of Pandaria" gives you a debuff called "Heart of Y'shaarj". Heart of Y'Shaarj - Spell - World of Warcraft

Maybe try to open the box under the heart?

This might be a strech, but earlier in the thread, a GM tells a player to run away if they open it. That makes sense, because when you stand under the heart, you end up taking a lot of damage, so you would have to run to not die.

I re-read the whole thread after more than 1.5 year since I contributed to it for the last time and it is still the single best thread I ever spotted on OwnedCore... As KuRIoS said, it really has the adventurous and explorational spirit of the "Old WoW". The days when wowhead didn't exist yet, allakhazam slowly starting to build the quest database.. The time where you had to discover everything by yourself - and boy! There were things to discover back then...

For those still extremely interested in this item... I started digging into the history of what a puzzle box is.

    and....WOAH.

While the quotes/whispers coming from the box do in-fact reference the Lovecraft stories (then again doesn't all of WoW).. what about the idea of the box itself.

Collectible Spot - Hellraiser puzzle boxes - YouTube This is just a video from a fan of the Hellraiser movies/stories who explains the significance of the Lament Configuration (Puzzle Box).
If you don't feel like watching the video, here's some of the significant things mentioned in the video...but i HIGHLY recommend watching to hear the similarities
"The box appeared in Hellraiser 1, but we did not learn the true origin until Hellraiser 4 where we find that the puzzle boxes were discovered to be the key to opening Hell"
" He was seeking a LARGER box to permanently open up Hell, but he died at the present time. his ancestor later created a giant satellite to trap Pinhead inside, but the satelite collapsed in on itself creating the Puzzle Box, "
" ...but every one who owned one knew exactly what to do with it. Even though anyone else who picked up a box would have no idea how to use it"
"... you would get chains coming out of these things, and the person who opened it would be toast as well"

Also taken from findings on various sites like wowwiki/wowpedia - Aman ("His name and mentions of past and future strongly suggest that he may be related to, or even an avatar of, Aman'Thul himself.") says to players
"Who hath summoned forth Aman? Ah, I see you toil with relics of the past. Be warned that even your creators are fallible. Digging too deep into your past might bring an abrupt end to your future."

Is the puzzle box a prison? If we can't kill the Old Gods or Azeroth will be destroyed, what do we do with them?
Look at the Heart of Y'Shaarj in the pandaria scenario. a giant square box, suspended by chains, titan like construction, engraved runes on each side. looking a bit like a BOX.

Am I really the only one who seems some similarity in the box that contains the Heart of Y'Shaarj and the smaller (obviously if human hands can attempt to solve) box we found earlier in Northrend?

I'm trying to turn this back into a discussion. I don't think I'm 100% correct but this mysterious-as-all-f*ck item keeps surprising me.
We need to bring this thread back to life as I now firmly believe there is more meaning to this item than originally thought.

I'm going to go ahead and necro this for this specific line:

    9. The giant rook watches from the dead trees. Nothing breathes beneath its shadows.
