    Sick of Donation Servers

Is anyone else sick of this whole Donation-Bullshit? I've been taking part in the WoW emu scene from the start on
and over the years it got more and more unbearable.

Its fine if you need donations to keep the server alive, but this bullshit now
ended up as item-buy-system. Most servers dont need the money and the
admins and the team enrich themselves while they make it almost impossible
for player that DONT HAVE THE MONEY to play FAIR.

It is getting out of hand, people donate to get items, not because they
like the server or want to keep the server alive. People that dont have the money
are getting left alone and are totally disadvantaged in every kind of PVP.

Its kinda sad what has happened to the emu community and i barely even play
on servers because it makes me mad how greedy most admins are.

i agree with you, thats why i made my server - PvP/PvE - with no donations that players cant get from playing the game and NO VIP. I want to get rid of that whole notion and stick with a traditional blizzlike feel :/

What, you think people are going to fund it themselves if they can get players to pay for it? And you think people are really going to turn down a little bit of cash for all there hard work? I don't think it's ethicaly right either but it's human nature. There is nothing you can do about it.

I believe the majority of servers that accept donations will spend the money on hosting or anything server related. I know this is not the case for ALL servers, however alot of the servers most likely do spend the majority of the donations on the server. If you go to a server website and take a look at the donations, it may seem as if the owners are basically selling server-related products for real money, but for a number of servers, this method is used to gain money to spend on the host etc.

You can't host a server without money as you gotta pay for a dedicated etc, running it from your home pc is fail after you get a good amount of players.

Yeah, but at the same time you are killing the game for non-donating players.

That can be true, but if donation is handled properly it won't dramatically effect the gameplay of non-donating players. Sure over powered gear is a problem, but honestly if a server is selling over powered gear I don't normally want to play there. There are a lot better ways to get players to donate than gear. Thats just how I feel.

I find that having specific things people can get from donating rather than gear is more effective. So the ability to use some chat commands. You can find plenty of #something commands out there, and a good dev should be able to make some for your server. Selling levels on a blizzlike, or pre-made characters has actually done alright. Also you can give them special titles and stuff like that. Players love that sort of thing.

+1 for novelty items and visual benefits rather than overpowered gear for donors

A few things I had people donate for on my old server:
    1) Mohawk grenade (this was before it was announced by blizz, was in DBC's still)
    2) A coin that increased XP gain
    3) A flag that gave donater flagged accounts (custom script) to have a chance to cast a special damaging spell upon critting (more visuals than anything else)
    4) Access to closed betas of new content etc before others.

Ya. Giving donators access to content others don't have access to yet is a great way to get people to donate. Just like having people pre-order in order to get in the beta.

I would have to agree, I find that servers (Like my own) that give away simple novelty items and extra content, or even when you go the item route... sticking with the higher-end blizzard items, or levels rather then the super powered donor gear is always better... not to mention it keeps the game play more or less fair where non-donors have a good chance at getting the same gear as people donate for. I've also had the teleportation GM command be a success as a donation option...

Sick of donations? Maybe you'll get sick of actually finding a good top list server with around 500-1000 players that are actually lagg free then? Hosting costs, no debating about that.

I'm sure you can find a none donator server, but you won't find one with more than 200+ players and it won't be up for a long time.

I bet he meant donations are okay as long as they do not result in OP gear. And yes, I have to admit that OP gear for donations sucks.
