Sick of Donation Servers

Naw see us people being in the scene it is a reward that has warped into something that is expected now. imo raffle drawing among the donators for "better gear that is not too op" would fit better for donation "Schemes" if that is what you guys wanna call em. personally I am not rich and any money from others to me = a bonus when i was compiling/hosting in 07.

Hell Wowbeez just changed it but you couldn't get the ending game gear unless you donated i can understand getting donations to help keep the server up but i tell you this i can make a server where it don't cost anything to keep it going just use hamachi right lol......but to my point if people donate for gear then the people who can barely afford a place to live who play have a disadvantage because they goto BGs and can't stop other players cause they are donators now i can understand asking donations for like the celestial steed or epic mounts why not take those into consideration instead of armor

You mean there are servers out there who are MAKING money and not losing them? dang, I should talk to the guys back home about making some OP gear for sale...

On another note, servers need to pay their bills somehow and donations is the only way to do that. The difference really lies in what you get for your money - is it game breaking if you dont or is it just a nice little bonus?
There are loads of places available where there's no particular advantage to being a donator.

give me a god dam effing break to those who think the current state of donations are acceptable. there are countless numbers of real companies that work and develop their OWN free to play games and sell purly cosmetic gear in game and no stated stuff at all not only do they have to pay for servers but they have to pay a huge amount of money just to create the game. they also need to pay for a office you know cause they are a company they need to pay for advertising since they cant just get ppl to vote on a top100site. and not only do these people who do all this just aford to keep the servers up but in the end make good profit. so i seriously do not understand the massive bitching about people who steal a game from another company saying they HAVE to charge in same cases over 100$ for a single in game item is necessary to keep the server afloat. in almost all cases tons of spells/skills are broken and countless other bugs and server issues. even the low pop servers that have gear for "sale"(not donations) make tons of money def enough to make a living off of. hell even if these losers developed their own game from scratch it is still way to far over the top, but they are not they are thief's making tons of money from someone's hard work and gouging out their customers eyes with a fork.

example molten wow doesnt even have fukin ulduar up and running are u serious this place has been out on retail for over a year. they have 3 realms with average maybe 3500 players on each at anytime in a day. tons of people donate. I saw a dude yesterday who spend like 200bucks on gear. and there are TONs of people who donate. this kind of crap is WAY THE HELL BEYOND just supporting the servers this is greedy people (who cant even run a good server) geting semi rich.

if all you did was sell stuff like mounts or custom gear skins(not gear just graphic) or transformation type consumable items or any number of things that didn't affect the gameplay whatsoever servers would more then be capable of supporting the server and easily even pay for their own time investment.

I put hundreds hours into developing the server AND you want me to spend $300+ a month? So some random kids can have fun completely at the expense of my time and money? Good luck with that. I'll pass.

You sound like you did it against your will, and that you find the idea of people playing a server appalling.

It can be done right. There's a balance, just like a good economy -the whole system in WoW is fragile, you have to be able to manage it. I agree though, most servers are greedy, unproductive and unfair.

My friend and I are actually working on a project / server that is strictly against buying items, just because I couldn't find a single decent server that wasn't bullshitted with this stupid "donation" concept.

Legal definition of "buy"

So even if they call the money a gift, it's still purchasing.
It pisses me off even more that everyone calls it donating when it's really purchasing.

I would start a server if I wasn't so concerned about the hosting prices. I really don't want to rely on donations to 'break even' on hosting prices when they are so high. I think more people are going to donate when it is something that is unobtainable in game.

I get the feeling that the bigger private servers use the donation money to use it to buy stuff to themself in real life instead of use it for the server as long they pay the bill to keep the server up they use the rest for private stuff

you know whats funny is i can make a server for free and get it running almost 80%....there is free webhosting out there...people just need to be smarter than the average bear. the only cost they would have is keeping their internet up lol....but on a keen note....making profit off of actual in game items is not cool at all....i can understand making your own gear and selling it but really donations are donations... they can't state they are donations when they are giving items along with it ...that is considered selling and marketing...not donations.....heck the other day i tired this one server out....almost no people on it and almost everything worked on the server....and there wasn't even a donation system on this persons server......now thats a true server...someone who makes a server just to make it....doesn't care about money just wants to play the game with others...isn't that what private servers are all about.....being able to play for free with people who are cool and want to play......but alas people are to greedy in this world now a days....heck we are so greedy that we actually sell air....you know us old school gamers...what we really liked was the adventure and ability to connect to others on a game...we never cared about making money all we cared about was reaching our peaks...being tested in ways that no others could comprehend.....it was a way to seek out things we could not do in real life and just to feel the things that were merely impossible to figure out...thats true gaming....testing your minds capabilities....non of this lets get rich schemes.....good old days where so much better
