Donations are fine, but if theres a reward for it, A.K.A BUYING, then its wrong. Most of the money made from donations are just going straight to their pocket. Anyone remember the whole WoWscape case? Peyton made a living off donations..
+rep people who help you
Free enterprise, free economy.
I think all of it is fine. If nobody likes a particular server then no one would use it.
Is it illegal to have a buy/sell server? Do you have to refer to it as "donating"?
Just be honest about it.
I agree with the whole donation thing, most top ranked servers have Extremely OPed gear and when u buy it you own everyone and everything by yourself. hell, there was one server that had donation gear so powerful, you could kill illidan by yourself, now thats bad (this was before wotlk) Honestly, i run my server free, the only thing i need is a webhost and a server computer, the rest of the donations would go towards nothing, i would bank it for future use, in-case of a server emergency. I've done it before. Anyhow i dont use much donations on my server and i know none of the servers do either. Its 4 dollars a year for a webhost.. theres no real point in donating unless you really want to be nice about it and help out the owner of the server. thats why its called Donating. now if it were BUY ITEMS thats a little out of hand. i mean of course you should get a reward for donating but not say WoWSCAPE CHESTGUARD 99999 armor 9999 agi 9999 stam 9999 strength 9999 int 9999 spirit adds 99999 damage per attack.. no, it should be balanced and able to be killed by the other players that have (for example) teir 10, make a teir 11, teir 10 can still beat it BUT its a little harder.
and it IS illegal to have a server, period. if its found out by blizz that you have one, you get shut down and sued for 24million dollars (Peyton)
Its business, although an illegal one. Don't end up like Peyton getting sued for 24 million USD.
how much money was this Peyton making?
I remember playing on a sort of popular private server where donating would get you amazingly overpowered gear... We were having a duel event and most people were evenly matched, except for the guy who had donated about $250 dollars for dual wield 2 staffs and a full set of OP gear. Didn't end up having any fun.
It's not about Admins being greedy, if they are taking the money and putting it in their pocket, that's a different story, but most don't, contrary to popular belief hosting isn't free >_>. letting players donate for OP gear is just a stupid mistake, looking at it from a business standpoint, it will just drive players away and make your server unappealing, but making players donate for things they can get ingame can leave you short on money and can be the downfall of your server, the best thing to do is to let players donate for custom fun content that does not interfere with PvP, like a special donor area.
This is probably one of the most ridiculous threads i've ever seen. Regardless of what most you think - donating is a very important part of having an emulation server. Though it doesn't seem like donating, if we called it buying then blizzard would be on our asses faster than you can scratch yours. It is donating in a sense - like the purple heart charity. You donate to them and they send you a purple heart emblem as a sign of appreciation. With Emu servers the best way to describe it is - "if you take care of our server, we'll take care of you(offer gear)". Yes I know that its irritating to have to face against that guy who payed $400 to get all of the OP donation gear. But thats not our problem here, take it up with the server that you play on. A lot of servers have perfectly balanced gear, but its actually pretty hard to keep it balanced sometimes. This topic was a waste of all of our time and filled with a bunch of noobs who don't know jack about running an emulator server. And those of you saying that your making a server with absolutely no donations. GL, I garuntee you won't break a 50 player peak. But I really do wish you the best of luck - Its all a learning process.

Sir. I think you need to get your head out of your ass.
No one is saying that donations themselves are bad, but when they're being rewarded with game-breaking shit that ruins it for the majority of the players, that's when it gets well... game-breaking. Or at least that's what they're complaining about.
As for me, I'm saying just screw buying items in general. It's not possible to make them balanced, and people will bitch and quit either way.
The reason Blizzard hated WoWscape was because of the large income that they made from items that were a part of Blizzard's WoW engine, regardless if it was their own modifications that made the item appear.
It's like stealing something, rebranding it, and selling it.

Do NOT tell me to get my head out of my ass. I know a hell of alot more about this subject then you do. Have you ever even ran a private server? Has your population ever increased over maybe 20 players. I highly doubt it. Btw - Dont talk shit and insult me when the points that you insulted me about, I agreed with. Learn to read. I agree a lot of people make stuff over powered and it should be stopped. And blizzard problem wasn't with WoWScape - it was with the fact that the massive sum of money that they made, was heading straight into the owners pocket. I've read the court case documents. They were released awhile ago, so take a look at them before you start spitting out more bullshit. I'm not here to flame - but I do not appreciate being flamed. DONATIONS ARE COMPLETELY NECESSARY!!!! And sometimes you have to do whatever you can to get people to donate - even if that involves offering OP gear. If its the only way you can pay off your dedi, your gonna do it. Before you come in here telling these servers their wrong for what their doing - put yourself in their shoes, and I don't mean metaphorically. Get a good server, purchase a dedi, and start paying 300$ out of your pocket because thats exactly what your asking them to do.

What the hell do you think I'm doing? I've got more than half a brain, I'm gonna get my shit working before I put people on it.
It's not as hard as you say it is, it's not like I haven't done it before.
And I told you to get your head out of your ass because you're obviously not understanding what's being said here.
I'm not the only one who needs to learn to read.
And sure, I also need to get my head out of my ass. It would definitely be more difficult to get people to donate when there isn't some kind of reward. And Blizzard doesn't put down on paper their TRUE reasoning. They're a good company, and they have good lawyers, they know how to win and make the most out of it.

This is a pointless argument. I really wanna see you succeed with your goal Namor - then maybe a lot of other servers will start, I'm just saying I don't see it happening. But I wish you luck.
