  • Global Supremacy Episode 6: The Battle Rages On

    SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers for Cataclysm quest lines.

    Every other week, or once in awhile, News Chief Aphel uses the mighty powers of speculation and social science to help analyze and make sense of the tangled web we call "Lore". Join us as we take an adventure through the dynamic world of... World of Warcraft.

    For the last couple of days, I've been desperately leveling my Night Elf (Highbourne) mage, along with a couple of other alts I've created to experience the redone Vanilla quest lines.

    The new quest lines are lore-rich and have a sense of involvement. While questing and leveling from 1-60 is markedly easier, the quests and the indeed the whole experience are much more enjoyable than the old quests. For the first time in years, I'm actually reading the quest text again.

    Before this point, Blizzard had always appeared to me to neglect the dynamic story of the (Cold) War between the Alliance and the Horde. Now that Azeroth has been shattered by Deathwing, both of the resource-starved confederate alliances of the Alliance and Horde are desperate to replenish their domestic economy. This is especially true for the Horde, as the Kaldorei have cut off trade with Orgrimmar completely to protest the Warsong Clan's actions in Ashenvale.

    For me, this expansion really defined the Night Elves in Warcraft III terms. The Night Elves no longer appear to be peace-loving pacifists, and rightfully so. Blizzard has returned the Kaldorei to their original state, which is a supremacist, ruthless empire. A Sentinel officer actually tells you to eradicate an entire tribe of trolls from Darkshore. Shandris Feathermoon herself states that all of the non-Kaldorei should be evicted from Feralas. It is inspiring to see such an underestimated race taking action to save their homeland.

    One of the more interesting things about the Night Elf quest line was the confirmation that Night Elves indeed use sniper rifles and rifles in general. A gnome Spec-Ops commander criticized the elves for not using his "snipers", which were really just massive cannons that shoot a slightly more accurate cannonball at Horde. This quest was possibly the goriest in the game, as Orc Wind Riders split into hearts, lungs, bones, and meat as they explode from the cannon rounds, but I digress.

    Blizzard has really focused on removing the black and white stigma that plagued Alliance and Horde lore. No longer is the Horde a behemoth of savagery and wrongdoing, and no longer is the Alliance a noble and honorable union of races who refuse to turn to the dark arts or use unethical methods to dispose of their foes; the lines of morality have been blurred by necessity, suffice it to say.

    Because the Kaldorei's independent, isolationist, and supremacist qualities have emerged in the face of chaos, is it also true that the other races have changed as well?

    The Forsaken have expanded their ambitious campaign to the human lands of Hillsbrad. This raises an important question of the nature of sovereignty. Say for example that a disease hit a nation on Earth that transformed a good majority of the inhabitants of that state into perpetually-sick clouds of disease. If nearby states and countries, along with the survivors of the virus move in to secure the land for themselves, should the disease-ridden majority be entitled to their homelands? This really depends on your political ideology, and it is an extremely difficult question to answer, and always a difficult answer to argue.

    QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
    The Horde is traditionally seen as a bastion of savagery and primitive-minded warriors and nomads, but have the Alliance committed any great heinous act of brutality in the past? For the second part of the question, which faction overall has done the most terrible acts?

      I completely agree. I stopped reading quests texts on my second playthrough in BC.

      But come the shattering.. Everything is so new, and it all seems so connected, Blizzard really have done well with this. Cataclysm is going to be a huge hit.
