    Just wanted to say this is definitely some good information.

    On a side note I would highly recommend that anyone serious about doing anything with UV mapping to learn Maya. Maya is the industry standard these days for pretty much any aspect of Computer Animation. If you want to try it out the Personal Learning Edition is free and available from Autodesk's website.

    If it's anything like 3D Studio Max that I use, you need to select the object and go to 'Export Selected...'
    I don't do tutorials.

    when i do that i can select:

    MayaAscii (.ma)
    MayaBinary (.mb)
    Move (.mov)
    MentalRay (*.*)

    MentalRAy = NameofFile.mi..

    None of theese will open in photoshop cs4 :/

    I suggest you go consult some Maya help docs/tutorials then because I'm preeetty sure it can export to OBJ. I seem to recall there being a plugin menu option to enable OBJ import/export functionality, try digging around in your menus.
    I don't do tutorials.

    There is a plugin indeed. It's just initially disabled (god knows why..) I'm not at my pc atm so I can't gief the menu path but it's there fo' sho'. Find your plugins list, it'll be in there somewhere.
