You can do this is CS3 BTW.

if i remember correctly. In photoshop cs3 you can view your model in photoshop but you still needed to paint on a plane that was displayed on the model. So you had like a instant preview of how your texture looks on the model. with CS4 you can actaully PAINT ON the model.

I think CS4 isn't anymore different than CS3... just another way for them to make money

You never really need to update it. If you ask photographers, a lot of them still work with CS1. The changes are only on a few groups of the users. Like inDesign mostly got updated for web, iirc. Photoshop has the 3D artists now. Etc.
