Hey everyone,
I've been running RBGs recently on my main and alts and I see that there are some small things that people don't do that would otherwise be really helpful. This isn't going to be in any particular order, but I will make sure to add examples where something might be a tad confusing.
**I realize some of these things may be "common sense" but I'm putting this out there for those who may not know.**
WSG/Twin Peaks Tips
1. Separate FC and Healers - This is rather simple if you look at it, but most people I play with fall into the mindset of tunnel-visioning either the flag carrier or a healer. For this, you merely just apply/reapply snares & cc on the healers while you let the FC run ahead. This works best if you have a frost mage, hunter, rogue, lock etc. You don't want everyone to fall back and do this because it defeats the whole purpose of the strategy. If you have a single person who can skillfully pull this off, a lot of the times the FC will not stop to stay near his healers, but he will keep running ahead. This is the perfect time for your teammates to run ahead and own him because his help is a lot further back being kept away from him. Say you have a group made up of 1 tank(FC), 3 healers, and 6 dps. Most groups will keep 2-3 healers with their FC and maybe 1 or 2 dps. If you're group is running with even 4 dps on offense, if one of them can manage to separate the FC from his healers and helpers, 3 dps should have no problem taking down even the most geared FC in 10-15 seconds (most likely faster).
2. Stunning the FC - I see so many rogues, mages, warriors, demo locks, hunters, etc. throw their stun into the FC as soon as it comes off of cooldown. I hate having the perfect opportunity to line up a kill just to see "immune" pop up on the FC after you or your rogue drops his smokebomb. Here is a tip: save your stun for the healers or dps who are on defense with the enemy FC while you line up a kill. A full kidney shot+smokebomb is a very powerful tool. A lot of the times, it can score a kill. Sometimes it forces healers to run in, only to be hit with a full aoe fear from an affliction lock or shadow priest. Chances are, you will have forced the healers to have used their cooldowns prior to dropping the deep freeze/throwdown/kidney shot + smokebomb or whatever you can do with your group makeup. This is a basic rule in pvp, but I had to mention it because it is something that I see happen a lot and it gets irritating. Use your cc/stuns on the person who is standing in the back healing, not your kill target until the opportunity is perfect.
3. Playing defense - Here is the situation: Both teams are 1-1 and you just scored. There are 5 minutes left. There is no shame in finishing this with a turtle. I've been in this situation many times, and it has often won us games against rather skilled/high rated opponents. Have your healers spread out with your FC in a spot where the other team can only approach from one spot. For example, the roof in WSG or the upper level in Twin Peaks. Do not stack up, as this can allow the other team to rush in with one big group and aoe fear/zerg your FC. Position your defenses so that you can snare the other team as they begin to pour in. Your main objective is to separate them and try to kill them before they can reach your FC. Granted, this may not always work out, but if you have hunters drop traps, mages drop novas/RoF, and rogues FoK their crippling poison, you can slow the other team down. Now focus down 1 or 2 targets at a time while they attempt to run to your FC. Most teams wont stop to fight the slow down squad, but will attempt to run ahead to your FC and this works to your advantage. Even if they kill you, you will have wasted their time and you can always rez and run back. **If you see that they have 2-3 healers with this zerg group, 2-3 dps can split off and easily kill their poorly defended FC while the 7-8 people in the rest of your group continues to defend.
Battle of Gilneas/Arathi Basin(soon to be available in 10man format)
**Generally, it is easier to defend a base than it is to cap one**
1. Trick capping a base - There are a lot of ways to capture a node, and this technique is perhaps the funniest. You only need two people to do this: 1 random class and 1 rogue/druid. Also, it helps if the node is only guarded by one person, but I have used this technique against a group of up to 4 people. Have the rogue/druid get into position and be ready to cap(while stealthed). Next, you have the other person attack or lure the person/people guarding away from the flag by attacking and kiting them far enough away as to where they wont notice your stealthed friend capping the flag. After successfully ninja capping the base, you have 2-3 friends come help defend and its as simple as that. This has won me the game in Battle of Gilneas so many times, and every time I pull this off it is absolutely hilarious.
**Tip for those defending a node: DO NOT GET LURED AWAY. Example: If you see a hunter attempting to kite you away from the flag at stables, LoS him while you have a clear view of the flag. Do you see the buff of a sub rogue or feral druid on him? Call for help if you are alone. Otherwise, stay near the flag and let a friend go deal with the hunter.
2. Capping a solo defended node (as a rogue): If you play rogue and your team tells you that there is only a shadow priest (for example) guarding GM, get over there and cap the base. If the priest is right by the flag, sap and instantly begin to cap the base. If he trinkets, blind him and instantly begin to cap again. When you have assaulted the node, just vanish and keep him off the flag with saps until reinforcements arrive for you. Any class that has a cc that is long enough can do this, but its so easy for rogues as they can force trinket with sap into a full blind. Granted, you could just kill the priest, this is a lot faster and you can usually cap before the enemy gets reinforcements.
**Don't try this against classes with pets or paladins who can bubble your blind(unless bubble is on CD)**
3. Covering your capper: Is your buddy a gnome or goblin? Mount up on your mammoth mount and stand on him as he caps. Most people wont realize it until its too late.
4. Pushing the GY: Have you just cleared out all the enemies at a node? You don't need everyone to be capping the flag. Instead, go to the GY and snare/cc the people who are ressurecting so they don't interrupt the person who is capping.
5. Solo defending a node: Have you just been left alone at a node? Is there a group of 3 ally or horde coming to assault your base? For this example, lets assume you are guarding farm or stables. When you see the group coming, run away and LoS by the nearby building. You don't have to face this group head-on. Instead, when you see them start capping, aoe the flag and get back out of their LoS. Repeat this until help arrives. Most of the time, they will all attempt to cap right off the bat, so this usually works. In the situation that 2 of them actually come after you, just kite them while throwing an interrupting dmg attack on the capper. If you have a pet, stand away from them and have your pet keep hitting them. Do whatever you can to keep them from capping.
6. Force Ressurecting: If you are defending a node and you just got killed, on your first or second death (if the rez timer is too long for a spirit rez) run to your corpse and force rez. Now you can keep the people from capping a bit longer while you wait for help.
There are plenty of other useful tips, and I have prolly left some out, but for the time being I cannot think of anything.
Feel free to leave comments and your own tips, I can always edit them into this guide.
