Edwin VanCleef was originally one of the architects that worked on the rebuilding of Stormwind City after its destruction at the end of the Second War. A master of the art of masonry, VanCleef was personally responsible for the design of many of the more awe-inspiring structures of Stormwind. Not the least of such structures was the impressive Stormwind Cathedral, which later became the center of both the faith of the Holy Light and the revived order of paladins. The reconstruction of Stormwind was an arduous task, but with such a genius as VanCleef masterminding the operation, the project was completed smoothly and in record time. However, the leaders of the city -- in a move heavily influenced by the corrupt nobility of Stormwind -- refused to pay the Stonemasons Guild for their work, citing the already enormous economic burden the Alliance had elicited due to the ravages of the Horde.Originally Posted by rudez
Following this obviously unwise decision, it was Edwin VanCleef decision to lead many of his colleagues, in search of wealth via other avenues. This was the beginning of the Defias Brotherhood.
The actual aim of the Brotherhood, of course, was not merely financial gain: VanCleef, along with the other disenfranchised masons, had a score to settle with Stormwind, and their vengeance became their new goal.

Because, even I, a die-hard fan of the Alliance with several Ally 60's, have to admit- The Alliance is mostly made of whinny 10 year olds.Originally Posted by relz
The undead have appeared all throughout Azeroth, most commonly in nature as Revenants or wraiths. They were used as a combat tool during the First War when the Necrolytes of the Horde learned to animate corpses as skeleton warriors in their fight against the Alliance. Later, the studies of the Necrolytes developed into Necromancy, the form of magic used very heavily in the Third War when the Cult of the Damned spread the Plague of Undeath across Lordaeron.Originally Posted by relz
In modern times, 'undead' refers primarily to either the Scourge or the Forsaken, since nearly half of the human race have since become undead.
If you want a long-ass post about Forsaken (and/or Scourge) lore....it will be done at request.

Introduction and History
In the wake of Illidan's failed attempt to melt the icy continent of Northrend, the powerful energies possessed by the Lich King inside his Frozen Throne slowly began to decay. Inexorably this resulted in a partial loss of control of the more distant Scourge forces. The result was that many undead under the Lich King's mental domination had their conscious will restored. Their spirits and memories were somehow returned to their undead bodies. Even the Lich King’s champion, Arthas, began to weaken as the Lich King's power waned. Arthas the Death Knight and his lieutenant, Kel'Thuzad the Lich were suddenly thrust into an undead civil war. Still fanatically loyal to the Lich King, Arthas heeded the call of his master and returned to Northrend as Illidan launched his second attempt to destroy the Lich King directly. Arthas left Kel'thuzad in command of his forces when he departed (hence why he was put as the latest raid boss. Some were confused at this).
With Arthas's departure from Lordaeron, the three Dreadlords Balnazzar, Varimathras and Detheroc attempted to regain control over the undead forces in Lordaeron using their formidable mental powers. The former High Elf Sylvanas Windrunner rallied many of the newly freed undead to counter the Dreadlords' efforts. Sylvanas was amazingly successful and not only crushed the Dreadlords' forces, but also utterly destroyed the last major contingent of human forces in Lordaeron. She forced Varimathras into her service in exchange for sparing his life and took control of the ruined capital of Lordaeron as her own.
Dubbing her band of free-willed undead the Forsaken, Sylvanas worked to ensure that the damned such as herself would have a home free from threats by the living. Whether she plans a cure for undeath or to bring suffering to all the world is a question whose answer only Sylvanas knows. What is known is that the Horde sympathizes with the Forsaken. The orcs, having been enthralled to demon masters for a generation, felt an obligation to help similarly liberated people.
Additional Background
It should be noted that the reason Forsaken cannot be hunters or druids is that their very undeath makes it impossible to interact with beasts of the wild or the wild itself, which perceive them as abominations. Likewise the path of the Shaman is unavailable because of the twisted nature of the relationship between undead and the spirit world.
The "life" of the Forsaken is spent working not only for their own survival, but for power and revenge. Their dark lands are plagued by the remnants of the Scourge and the fanatical Scarlet Crusade, both mortal enemies. The Lady Sylvanas spends much of her time directing forces in distant lands in the endless battle against the Scourge. Under the leadership of Varimathras, the residents of Lordaeron -- specifically the Undercity, Brill, and Deathknell -- tend to the Scourge and Scarlet Crusade threats closer to home.

No one knows exactly how the universe began. Some theorize that a catastrophic cosmic explosion sent the infinite worlds spinning out into the vastness of the Great Dark - worlds that would one day bear life forms of wondrous and terrible diversity. Others believe that the universe was created as a whole by a single all-powerful entity. Though the exact origins of the chaotic universe remain uncertain, it is clear that a race of powerful beings arose to bring stability to the various worlds and ensure a safe future for the beings that would follow in their footsteps (The Titans).Originally Posted by idusy
