To be honest I think anyone who played through the Vanilla and TBC stages has had the same thoughts. The amount of effort you had to put in during those days was far more than what you do now. Back then there was a sense of achievement, wiping 60 times on a boss before downing it was expected and there was a community feel because of minor things like that. Now going into a raid and wiping once half of the raid leaves and there is a lot of finger pointing instead of being productive. The months and months it took to get gear gave it a sense of worth not farming a few heroics and LFR raids before being in end game content, you had one main character and you had to put all your time into that one character to make it to end game. In my opinion the availability of items in game and the ease of access to them is what killed it which all started at the back end of WOTLK.
That said, I still think it is one of the best MMO games around even with all its faults
