How does Cross Realm work exactly?

I want to farm Ancient Spineclaws on the timeless isle, but while on a different cross realm of my choosing. What do I have to do for this, without getting someone from that realm idling around with me?

As I understand it the cross realm you are on is decided by the group leader, also he has to be in the same zone so I'll get transferred, right? Is there a level requirement and does he have to be online or can he just log off after that?

Also can I accomplish this in any way with the character on the target realm being on a test account?

A level 90 from another realm that has you as a real ID friend can invite you to party and doing so you will be tranfered to his realm.

Isn't that the same thing basically?

When you add someone's battletag you get their 'Real-ID'. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Madden92 is correct. However you cannot trade or mail etc. Only talk I presume.

Also since patch 5.4 there are 'Coalesced Realms', this means some realms are semi-merged. You can group up and whisper with these players and they are always visible to you, even when you're not in group with them.
