I play, been playing about a year.
If your going for more of the classical or just a good clean sound, get a acoustic.
If you like to trash, heavy metal, solo, do crazy sound effects get a electric.
But as good brand goes, i wouldnt worry about that to much id just get what the pros at your guitar shop says is nice and that fits in your price range. First get good with what you got, then worry about upgrading your gear.
But for some good cheap amps id go Line6.

ive been playing for a year, get electric guitar first because the strings are much easier to push in after your fingers are hard you can play acoustic

If your worried about that get a nylon string acoustic, those will not hurt your fingers. I started on a steel string acoustic it can tear up your fingers quick haha.

I play electric, too. for the brand, I'd say Ibanez (NOT the Gio series), Schecter or ESP. I'd go with Ibby if your finances don't suck, try to go with the prestige series, as their quality is top-notch and you'll be able to sell it later for quite a buck. btw, if you're planning to play any 7string content, go straight to 7string guitar, as you'll be pissed at not being able to play thet (like I am ).

    EDIT:

I've been playing for ~1 year seriously (practicing everyday, learning songs, writing random things) and probably ~2 years messing around on-and-off. As for what type of guitar/what brand to get, it really depends on what kind of music you want to play and what your price range is. Same thing for an amp. I'd say to take lessons for like, 6 months minimum just so you can have someone teach you the basic techniques for everything.

I probably want to get like a $200 guitar for starters, and I probably want to play mostly metal, like some Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc.

BTW, do you guys know if Ibanez is any good?
