Hello
I've been playing guitar for about 5 years, I taught myself. Tab isn't the best to start on, beleive it or not, learn piano. It might sound counter-intuitive but take 5 years of piano or so (probably could get by with less) while your learning guitar. Piano will give an excellent musical foundation man... Anyway! When your looking to purchase a guitar, you get what you pay for. There's 'less expensive companies and more expensive companies, and I have seen plenty of occasions where a more expensive companies' "cheap" guitar plays much better then the cheap companies' "expensive" guitar.
If your looking for a versatile electric guitar, PRS Guitars or Paul Reed Smith is an EXCELLENT choice.
If your looking for an acoustic guitar (or a damn good classical guitar) Martin (High dollar for the professional models) are ideal, but for learning, try to find an older Ovation guitar that is American made. (They outsourced their production on the newer ones.)
No mater what brand you get, here's some things to look at.
Neck Material - The harder the wood, the longer the sustain (which is good). Check to see how the neck attaches to the body, and how adjustable it is (hopefully, with proper care/handling, you'll never have to touch it. Most of all, dont buy something you dont want to play. It could be the best guitar in the world, if it looks terrible but plays amazing, when starting, you wouldn't be able to play it to it's full extent (and the terrible looks might actually dissuade you from wanting to play it).
Most of all, HAVE FUN!
