Help in editing Blp files

I have been trying, in complete futility, to change the skins of the nightelfs to the color red (well not just red, but that is the gist of the main color). I convert the blp to png and edit it in photoshop, but when I convert it back and put it back into a mpq, it either makes the skin green (indicating an error) or world of warcraft won't even start. I need some help; if someone could tell me what I am doing wrong or give me a guide how they edit skins, I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance.

it's a good guide, but I basically been trying that for the past 2 hours without luck. I think it is because I need to adjust the hue/saturation in the png (only way to get red on a nightelf body), and it changes the properties of the blp. Can anyone else tell me how I can fix this problem?

Give the image a red hint without editing the Hue
