The reason your shirt is coming out in grayscale, I believe, is because your RGB filters are set to grayscale. I havn't installed GIMP as of yet, so I can't tell you how to fix this completely, but explore the drop down menu which has all the Layers and Alpha options in it, I believe you can change it from Greyscale to RGB through that menu.
