Hey there. That type of thing happens quite a bit in the arts. I knew an artist who spent weeks on a piece and it didn't even get half the attention of a painting that took less than a few hours in a gallery. Those who know better always appreciate the quality works and don't gravitate towards the average and the predictable (basic re-skins and re-coloring).
I understand what this whole thread is about but its a shame to see talent quit all together on a fairly good forum (only one i really know of that has original work). But take it for what its worth from a leecher I guess. I'm not sure whats worse though, me being a leecher because I don't post my own minor edits or being a person who pumps out average work using too much of the color black.
Are to implying something mate?
The BG edits were made for Matt and were going to be sold. Otherwise I would have never made them. Anyway, old news doesn't need to be brought up again.
As for the GM Island edit, you have no clue how long that took, so don't go spewing wrong information.
I didn't do it for the rep. (how many times do I need to repeat that?)
I had all the rep I could need and want already at the time of release.
It was released for MMOwned. Something new to inspire you all. And so it did... a few at least.
I'm not sure what an ADT is, but maybe that's just what makes me a crappy model editor.
I remember DBC edits and plain Texture/model edits to make entirely changed classes, and titles, and pet names... but never have I BUILT something.
I know I rarely post, but I do lurk quite a bit, as well as the occasional (very) model edit.
Though, inspiration needs to hit. Like that guy who did the Shadow Hunter project, inspired me. Not much has happened since, and nothing seems edit-worthy.
Maybe the whole thing about Model Editing isn't to EDIT, rather than to CREATE... is that what you're saying, mister Original Poster?
can't agree more with this post.
I also have problems getting help for certain things because either no one ever done it, tryed it and succeeded or the people that do know look with a blind eye to random people they don't know that are asking them qeustions... it's not that i am pointing at anyone and of course i am very greatfull for everyone that did provide me with info about things i want to do .. but ya if you want to get beyond basic model editing skills as a newb or even contributor it's pretty hard getting info or tutorials .. so for me it would be great if that "elite forum" would be available (because i guess information on there is alot more advanced).
and as for world editing .. n so far i have only seen 1 world edit that looked intersting. and i know how much time it takes to build a level but most model edits just don't come anywhere close to what looks pleasing to the eye. and because of this i don't really see any interest in world editing ... but thats just my 2 cents on that matter.
but anyways i don't think we should close of to much for the newbs .. because we all started out as one and i think if we didn't had those kick ass models to look at non of us would have never developed any interest for model editing beyond basic texture swapping.
so ya some more "elite" info would be nice for us contributors but that about the only thing i think should change
that 1 thread a week thing sounded pretty nice too :3

This is probably a bit late and possibly not wanted, but I'll offer this up now and duck potential stones as they come.
I'm just saying this from an artist's stand point (perhaps it's different for a model-editor, so I could be wrong), but please think back on what you got into model-editing for.
This question comes up for artists who sometimes get upset with attention etc (one example: quick, BS anime fanart getting more attention than some pain-staking traditional foundation/anatomy work), and the question seems relevant here. Sometimes it can get a person back on track, or at least help them reflect on the problem from a different perspective.
Why did you (general you) get into model-editing for in the first place, and what kept you there from the start, even with the learning curve?
Was it because it was fun, and you enjoyed making it?
Or was it for attention/comments?
Getting worried about comments or what other editors are doing can kill something that was once fun. If you really enjoyed the actual model-editing for it's own sake, then what others do, even if you feel it took zero skill (and in some cases, definitely true) shouldn't have that much of an impact on you.
Yes, some of it may be lame. Not disputing that at all.
Anyway, that's my two cents, for what it's worth.
Good luck with whichever way you go. I've been looking back on all the edits I could since I've joined, and yours were very neat.

You all got the wrong idea... they're not leaving model editing. They're leaving mmowned... Can you not all read?
We can make an assumption on how long it took, and I know very well how much effort it costed. I've been browsing through this forum and I was actually amazed.
But isn't the ammount of people that can use this(read: those who play on Private servers) very small to the people who are on regular servers?
I respect you and a lot of other people for what you can do and what you did, but you must understand that it is no use at all to most people.
On the other hand, if people ask questions they get brutally refered to the stickies and other threads. I understand why you do this, it's to keep spamming at bay but maybe people who want to learn must be approached differently?
And I think threads were everything is explained step by step, will help a lot of nabs who really want to learn it.
If we get a strong base to start from, we'll learn how to advance ourselves eventually. And some thread have good tutorials, whereas other threads do not.
But if we all learn how to do it good, than I hope we don't get the same shit all over again: 'With those stupid threads, everyone can make cool skins which makes us redunant and less special'
Don't understant me wrong, I do not know everything and I don't want to pretend that I know all, but this is just a situation which occurs many times(though on different places) that can be solved very easly. But you just gotta know what you want.
Either don't allow the noobs to enter this forum, but only the model editing experts or just improve the thread which are ment to help us!
I <3 the Harder Styles
I read the first few pages before I posted. It sounds connected to my point though (why they're leaving): the community in which they presented their model edits. I was just being general with model-editing period. The attitude you have towards your own craft/why you got started is very much connected to the community, as is the frustration.
My point overall still stands.
(Think Deviantart.com and a lot of the BS in that community. Just because there's dumbassery there doesn't mean you should be driven off because of it)
Spidey senses tingling!

DeviantARTs problem is the administration. There's a big difference.
Not necessarily what I was talking about. Their administration is a problem (especially in art theft and dealing with it) but not relevant here. Besides it's numerous administration problems, DA tends to suffer the same problem that the model-editing here is. Just like most sites where you share a craft.
What you have are hugely popular artists who specialize in anime, but don't actually have the technical knowledge in anatomy etc to back it up. Yet they produce some half-assed sketch that will get thousands of comments/favorites, versus some very talented artists who get half that. Why? Because it's the "in" th ing right now.
Some of them are new artists and learning, which is fine. But it teaches that drawing something a certain way because it's easy to get attention can cause frustration or teach bad habits.
That's what I'm comparing it too. Here it's quick and easy and even potentially crappy model edits versus ones that take a lot of time.
It breeds a lot of frustration.
DeviantARTs quality diversity is pretty well divided. This is different. DeviantART gets hundreds of people a month willing to learn and expand. MMOwned gets the opposite. We get the leechers and a few people who want to learn, and the give up.
Haha, I wouldn't know about hundreds of people a month willing to learn and expand. Most of it is just wanting the same attention you get on Myspace at this point, and skill isn't always a factor in that. Not that there aren't people honestly willing to improve their horizons, just probably not that generous a number.
You're right though, the MMowned has a different beast with the leechers versus contributors, And from reading a few of the earlier posts, you get the contributors versus each other too.
It's a shame that it brews this kind of stress and frustration.
Regardless, a lot has changed since 06.
