Gold Guide from TheDalaranInn.com
Alright, if you're like me, you've probably read a million gold guides and methods about making "vast fortunes" in WoW. You've almost definitely seen the generic Auction House and Profession guides that plague the community. I'm here to cut through all that garbage and present the absolute best methods of attaining wealth and status in-game.
Let's begin
I know what you're thinking: "We've heard this all before", well I'm sure you have, but it's more than likely been padded with fancy words to make you think you are learning something more than anyone with half a brain would already know. If you want to make gold, all professions can be money-makers; but some are, in fact, greater sources of income than others. To make it clear for you all, I'm going to break it down as simply as possible in the following section.
Professions
Remember, this advice is based off how I made my fortune; this isn't to say there may be ways to make money with professions I don't endorse. Anyway, let's take a look at the most profitable professions to undertake:
Mining
Alright, straight off the bat you'll want mining. I'm sure you've heard people say it's a great way to make money and that's it is so much better than all the other professions in terms of making gold - but I doubt they ever back it up with anything more than: "it just is".
Herbalism
Secondly, you'll definitely want to pick up herbalism. I personally find that herbs are plentiful around the world and there is always a type of herb that will sell for insane prices on a particular server; but I personally stick with my own personal mining / herbalism route in Icecrown.
What now?
Alright, so you've picked up Mining and Herbalism, levelled them to 450, and are ready to make a killing, right? Good, that's the spirit. Now, let me explain exactly how we will go about doing this; you simply can't randomly start wandering zones in the hope that your bags will magically become full of precious herbs - you need a route to follow. Luckily for you, I have the most refined versions of both; combined into one, perfect route:
Where is it?
This location is in Icecrown and is filled with mining and herbalism nodes; I use this every single day and it never fails to disappoint; it is even better with an epic flying mount (which you'll soon have if you don't already with this guide). I can rake in as much as two thousand gold a day with those very simple profession tactics alone. You can too, but you need to know where to go, and what to do. Let me assure you, using basic gathering professions to make gold is not the most effective way to go about accumulating massive amounts of gold; you can do it this way, but I can provide you much simpler, and far more effective methods.
There are obviously many other highly effective methods to make gold aside from professions. To some, simply flying around collecting raw materials and then selling them seems like the most boring and inefficient way to make serious gold; this isn't true, but again, professions aren't the only way to make gold. Let me further explain in the next section
The Auction House
Yes, the almighty auction house - much talked about and often considered the best way to make mass amounts of gold; this may be true to an extent, but I'll be explaining the easiest way to control your server's auction house.
Okay, by now you can easily have already made a few thousand off my previous profession tips, now we can safely move onto dominating your auction house; this is because for my method you need a good few thousand gold to start up your tycoon (depending on how big your aspirations are, of course). I am firstly going to briefly explain the idea behind my approach and then will list in plain English how to go about doing it for yourself.
What most auction house guides will tell you is to download Auctioneer, use the scanning feature daily for a week or so, and then sit back and pick off the cheaply listed items; now this may be a good way to make a steady income, it is not the best, not by a long shot.
Alright, what we want to do is very, very simple. Let me first start by using a simple analogy in context to the real world:
Let's say there was a single person who owned every single banana tree in the world. He grew and sold bananas to anyone and everyone who needed them. This would allow said person to set the price to whatever he wished, from $5.00 to $50.00; the point is, if someone needs a banana they will pay, regardless of price.
Using this real world example, we can see that to make a fortune on the auction house all you need to do is find a niche and monopolize it. This may seem absurd and incredibly difficult but trust me, it's not, and it works wonders for your bank account.
Okay now let’s apply this idea in-game. Obviously a 'banana' is the placeholder for an item that exists within the game, and we are attempting to control the majority circulating on your server. Here is a direct method you could attempt, as an example:
Search your AH for one of two things:
Jade
OR
Aquamarine
It's safe to say that these will sell for around 2 - 6 gold each; now, if this was me, I'd buy out every single last one of them, regardless of price, and relist them for 8g each.
Now, each time you log on simply search the auction house for whichever item you selected and buy out any listed below your price and relist them. What this does is ensures that you control that particular market niche and if someone needs them for whatever reason (usually to powerlevel a profession) they will fork out the gold because most people are impatient and want instant results.
The Trade Channel
Operating the trade channel is a method I utilize everyday to make quick and easy gold. It is not my primary source of income, but can easily supply me with some easy gold whenever I'm in a city. What you want to do here is look for people attempting to sell common items, such as raw crafting materials, on the trade channel.
People who are advertising their items here are usually desperate to sell, and therefore the perfect business opportunity for people wanting to make gold. If you see someone say in trade "WTS [item] x [amount], PST!", you can almost always buy what they have cheaper than market value, and pop it straight on the auction house for some quick and easy gold.
Patches
Alright, this technique is an absolute goldmine if you know what you are doing. What we are trying to do here is take advantage of when a new patch goes live. What you want to do is make sure you are up-to-date on what patches are coming out, and what they will change in-game. All you need to do is read the patch-notes and attempt to find something which we can make a killing off - let me explain:
The big money maker here is enchanting supplies. If you have accumulated enough gold to buyout an extreme amount of shards and / or dust, you will be rolling in gold before you know it. When a new patch is introduced, players will typically be getting new gear, or be wanting new enchants; this may be because of new PvE or PvP content, or the addition of new enchants.
Once you have stockpiled a decent amount of these materials, you wait until the patch goes live, log in as soon as you can, and list all of your items for an inflated price. Let's assume you spent 5,000 gold on materials at their normal market price; you would be almost guaranteed to sell them for three times what you paid, so that is a profit of 10, 000 gold. Not bad for a little patience, right?
My Personal Method
As an added bonus, I'm going to let you all in on a little technique I use to make a steady income when I'm not farming materials or playing the auction house. What you'll need to accomplish this, is:
Access to an Enchanter, either your own or a friend
Access to a Jewelcrafter, either your own or a friend
Now, what you'll want to do is make a macro that says something like this:
/2 -----------------------------------------------------------
/2 WTB ALL of your BLOODSTONES, CHALCEDONY, and ETERNAL EARTH
/2 COD the ETERNAL EARTH for 5g / each
/2 COD the BLOODSTONES / CHALCEDONY for 1g / each
/2 -----------------------------------------------------------
Once you've set that up, just press it every now and again while in the trade channel; you will eventually start getting mail from people wanting to quickly sell their materials.
Now, what we are going to want to do is gather these materials and craft a mass amount of either of these two items:
Crystal Chalcedony Amulet
Bloodstone Band
Once crafted by either yourself or your Jewelcrafter friend, we will be disenchanting them. These items typically disenchant into:
Lesser Cosmic Essence x 2 - 3
Infinite Dust x 3 - 4
The materials you gain from disenchanting far surpass the value that the raw materials used to create them. All you have to do now is throw the disenchanted materials onto the AH for a high price (because enchanting materials have no deposit and therefore cost you nothing to list).
