How to automatically sync wow Addons and Configs automatically between 2 or more computers using live mesh.
Flamers Note: This guide is NOT copied but handwritten by yours truly.
Yes, I searched for both "sync" and "mesh" so unless it's in the elite section nobody else has come up with or posted anything similar.
So, I'm one of the lucky few folks that gets to sneak in a few hours of WOW at work as well as home, but with every good thing there's always a downside. I'm an addon addict and AH (Auctioneer) fiend and have found that keeping your addons and config files synced between 2 computers is a PITA. I've usually ended up keeping a master copy on one machine and copying the files via thumb drive to the other once a week, but I've found a way to automate this process that I feel is significant enough to share with the MMOwned community. Setup is a little time consuming but the long term gain is well worth it.
Microsoft recently released a free new service called Live Mesh that gives you the ability to keep folders synced between computers as well as on 5gb of free web storage. The beauty of this is that you can specify exactly what folders and what locations you want synce'd up. (i.e. Addons & WTF) Furthermore it sycs only added or changed files so updates don't take very long as compared to other sync services.
So, Here's the process.
1) Sign up for the service at www.mesh.com. You need a microsoft live logon but most everyone has one for hotmail or MSN messenger.
2) Once logged into mesh click on "add device" to download and install the client software to each of your computers you wish to sync wow on. Once you are done you should see a live desktop and 2 computers on your live mesh space.
3) Click on "Live Desktop" and create 2 new folders, one called "Addons" and One called "WTF". Right click on each of these new folders and select "change sync settings". Choose the "When files are added or modified" sync option. You will now see a blue "addons" and "WTF" folder on the desktop of each of your computers.
4) We want to replace our regular wow addons and wtf folders with these sync'ed versions. But first let's turn the current folders into a backup copy of the addons and configs. Open my computer and navigate to you wow directory. (Usually C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\) Rename your current WTF and Interface\Addons folders to a different name such as WTF_BAK and ADDONS_BAK. Repeat for computer #2.
5) Now it's time to place the sync folders in the wow directory. Drag and drop the WTF folder into C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\ and the addons folder into C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface. Repeat for computer #2
6) Now for the final step! On your main computer copy the contents of your old WTF and Addon folders into the new sync ones. Give it a few minutes as the first sync may take a bit but from here on forward you can play on any machine you want and your updated addons and config files will be automatically copied to your other machine.
I know it's a bit of work but I hope some of you found this guide useful.
