[Guide] Reducing lag and Optimizing computer performance

Guide to Reducing lag and Optimizing computer performance

    First off:
    Start->Control Panel-> Add or Remove Programs->
Sort by date last used or size
Delete all programs you never use nor need.

    Optimizing Windows Startup Tasks

    1) Click START.

    2) Click RUN.

    3) Type MSCONFIG & then press your ENTER key.

    4) Click the STARTUP tab.

    5) Uncheck EVERYTHING (especially anything ATI-related) except the following:

    » Your firewall.
    » Your anti-virus.
    » Your anti-spyware.
» If you have a keyboard with special function keys, leave its driver checked.
» If you have a laptop with a touchpad, leave the touchpad drivers checked.
» If you overclock your video card using CoolBits or nTune, leave “nwiz” checked.
» If you overclock your video card with any other program such as RivaTuner or ATITool, leave them checked.
» If you overclock your CPU using uGuru, ClockGen, CPUFSB, etc. leave them checked.

If you are unsure about an item in the list, google the startup items name.If that still doesn’t find you an answer, leave it how it is.

    6) Click APPLY.

    7) Click OK.

8 ) Click EXIT WITHOUT RESTART.

    9) NOTE: When you reboot the first time after making these changes, you will get a System Configuration Utility popup letting you know that changes have been made. Simply click on the little check box and then click OK. After doing so, you will not see the popup again unless you make more changes to your startup list.

    Optimizing Windows Display and Effects

    Optimizing Your Screen Resolution:
    1) Right-click anywhere on your desktop.

    2) Select PROPERTIES.

    3) Select the SETTINGS tab.

    4) Using the Screen Resolution Slider, move it to 800 by 600 pixels.

NOTE #1: If your resolution is already set to 800×600, leave it there and skip this section.
NOTE #2: If you have 256MB of system RAM or lower, you may want to consider changing ‘Highest 32bit‘ to ‘Medium 16bit‘ color. The difference between 32bit & 16bit color is hardly noticeable in most cases.

INCREASING YOUR FRAMERATE AND REDUCING YOUR PING

"1 - TcpAckFrequency - NOTE if you are running Windows Vista this setting may not have any effect - a hotfix is needed which i'm tracking down. This works fine under Windows XP

Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu

    Then find:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\

There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed in there, find the one you use to connect to the internet, there will be several interfaces listed (they have long names like {7DBA6DCA-FFE8-4002-A28F-4D2B57AE8383}. Click each one, the right one will have lots of settings in it and you will see your machines IP address listed there somewhere. Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TcpAckFrequency, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1.

You can change it back to 2 (default) at a later stage if it affects your other TCP application performance. it tells windows how many TCP packets to wait before sending ACK. if the value is 1, windows will send ACK every time it receives a TCP package.

    2 - TCPNoDelay
This one is pretty simple (Discussed here)

Type "regedit" in windows "run.." dialog to bring up registry menu

    Then find:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Paramet ers

Right-click in the right hand pane and add a new DWORD value, name it TCPNoDelay, then right click the entry and click Modify and assign a value of 1.

Click Ok and close the registry editor, then reboot your PC."

    ty Nikka for the information.

I think I've seen this before. Not sure where though - I'm not going to flame, since I have no link.

Nice guide, if it is your own, that is.

    Seriously? 800x600?

Instead of that, just get a new computer.

I never claimed it was mine... i thanked Nikka for the information, he is the one who wrote it. Wth does it matter who wrote it anyway? Not everyone has access to the glider forum. I'm sharing, what i think, is solid information and contributing to this forum.

Ya know if some of you would put the effort you put into flaming/ doing <insert random derogatory thing here> into contributing instead, this forum would be a lot better, and the general population would be much more inclined to also help, sense they don't fear someone being a jerk to them if they ask a question or for example, copy/paste a solid guide.
