Protection Talent Builds
Alright, so here’s my take on all the talents in the protection tree, and a few in Arms/Fury that are used/were used for tanking. Thanks to Wroar from Tankspot for your good advice on some talents, although I disagree with some of your views. Before each talent I write either “YES” or “NO”. Yes meaning take that talent and no meaning don’t bother.
(NO) Improved Bloodrage: Horrible, horrible talent. Do not take this talent at all. With Warbringer and Bloodrage you will almost never need more rage at the start of a fight, so don’t waste your points here.
(YES) Shield Specialization: Great talent. I would take this in any protection build.
(YES) Improved Thunder Clap: Mandatory talent. The pure damage reduction you get from these three talent points is astounding.
(YES) Incite: I would positively take this talent in any build. It is great for your threat, and as Warriors seem to revolve a little more around crit and AP now, this is a definite yes.
(YES) Anticipation: Hell yes! 5% dodge is a huge avoidance boost. Take this talent!
(YES) Last Stand: Of course you take this talent. It is one of the best Oshi- buttons you will ever have. Ever. I personally adore this talent; it’s saved my butt so many times I cannot count them any more.
(YES) Improved Revenge: The stun on this talent is not too useful, but the new 20% bonus damage here is awesome for tanking. Revenge is a very high threat ability (more threat per rage point than Shield Slam), and 20% more damage is a great way to improve your tanking.
(YES) Shield Mastery: Get this talent. Not much more to say, with Shield Slam being so much more kick-ass in WotLK this is not only a huge DPS increase, but is also great for mitigation with the 20 sec lowered CD on Shield Block
(YES) Toughness: Yet another great protection talent. Every Warrior tank needs this. Not only does it provide a massive mitigation gain but it also increases your DPS if you have Armored to the Teeth (getting to that later).
(NO) Improved Spell Reflection: I would not take this talent for anything other than PvP. It might have one or two uses in a raid somewhere where you might want to Spell Reflect something from your party... but no, don’t get it.
(NO) Improved Disarm: Although there are rumours of bosses that can be disarmed in WotLK, I would not recommend this talent. Many bosses are unarmed or unable to be disarmed, so this doesn’t really have that much of a use while raiding.
(YES) Puncture: Although Devastate is no longer as widely used as it was during TBC, I would still recommend this talent. You still use Devastate quite a lot, and if you get some bad procs on Sword and Board you may be short on rage for a little bit so this would help then. If you want you can stick these points into Cruelty, but I personally feel more comfortable with Puncture.
(NO) Improved Disciplines: Useless. Maybe, maybe a minute off your Shield Wall is good, but if you’re using it more than once per 5 mins, get some new healers or some new gear, seriously. Shield Wall should be your serious Oshi- button, not something to push for shits and giggles.
(YES) Concussion Blow: I’d get it. Basically useless, but great for quickly pulling threat/controlling 4-5 mobs at once. Taunt one, Mocking Blow another, Concussion Blow another and Shockwave all that you can. It also leads to Vigilance, which is a huge threat gain in itself
(YES) Gag Order: The silence effect isn’t too great, but with how much you are using Shield Slam the increased damage is golden.
(YES) One-Handed Weapon Specialization: Of course get this. It’s a direct 10% damage increase on everything. 100% necessary.
(YES) Improved Defensive Stance: The spell damage increase is a nice bonus, but it’s the enrage effect we’re really after. 10% melee damage is great, but the real gold is in Enraged Regeneration (30% of your health back at the cost of one enrage effect). This ensures you don’t have to pop Bloodrage or Berserker Rage and you can just use it right away.
(YES) Vigilance: Some tanks do not like this talent. Personally, I adore it. Blizzard claims threat will get much more difficult in WotLK, and I believe them. But also, I can put this on the Mage AOEing and never lose threat any more. It’s almost too easy.
(YES) Focused Rage: While rage may not be the issue it was in TBC, this talent is just too huge of a rage management talent to pass up. Get this.
(YES) Vitality: Strength is the new important stat for Warriors. It increases DPS and your SBV now. On top of the Strength and Stamina gain, it also gives 6 expertise. Talk about a huge threat talent.
(NO) Safeguard: Yes, intervene is a great talent. Yes, we love it when we use it. But how often do we really use it? With Warbringer it is rarely necessary, and the extra bonus from this talent won’t help it too much. Don’t get this.
(YES) Warbringer: One of the best talents in this tree. It offers so much diversity and mobility I wonder how I did without it. This is indispensable on pulls and when trying to control caster mobs or save your friends, especially for one talent points. Get this one for sure.
(YES) Devastate: While you do not use Devastate as much as you did in TBC, it is still a very important talent to get. It’s only one point for a huge gain, get this for sure.
(YES) Critical Block: The crit on Shield Slam is what we’re really after with this talent. It nets such a large threat and DPS increase it is almost a necessity. The 30% chance to block double your SBV is also great though, you’d be blocking the whole hit from the boss like that.
(YES) Sword and Board: An amazing talent. It helps out your rage problems so much. You will often end up using Shield Slam more often than you use Devastate with this talent. It is very important, get it.
(YES) Damage Shield: With the new huge Block Values of Warriors, this talent is great for AOE tanking/grinding or even just for normal threat. Whenever you block or are hit by an attack you hit him back. Great!
(YES) Shockwave: The new defining talent for protection. It allows you to tank multiple mobs with ease, it allows you to control mobs from a distance, and it allows you to look really cool while doing it. This talent is very important if you plan to tank anything concerning multiple mobs.
Fury Tree:
(YES) Armored to the Teeth: With the increased reliance of Prot tanking on Attack Power this is a very strong talent for us. For a Naxx-geared tank it is quite a bit better than Cruelty point for point. And as you get better gear, the talent becomes stronger.
(Maybe) Cruelty: As said above, it’s less strong than but still a strong talent. Cruelty provides less for a Warrior tank than any of the Prot +crit talents, though, and when you need a talent point out of a threat spot to put into an avoidance spot, this is your first choice for cutting down.
(NO) Improved Demoralizing Shout: Now that Warlocks have an ability that does the same thing as Demo Shout, and they don’t stack, Imp DS has become less important. As such it’s not needed for a tank to spec into. If anything, there will always be a dps Warrior or Warlock in your raid that has it instead.
Arms Tree:
(Maybe) Improved Heroic Strike: A reasonable talent, really. Rage starvation occurs less in WotLK than it did previously, and the Glyph of Revenge could be used instead of this talent, but it’s still not bad. Mostly this talent is taken in order to reach Impale, though.
(YES) Deflection: A must-have talent since the dawn of time and nothing has changed. Always max this out.
(YES) Improved Charge: Combined with Warbringer this gives a nice threat boost during or at the start of fights and as such isn’t bad, but most of all tanks pick this talent just to get to Impale.
(NO) Anger Management: 1 free rage every 3 seconds is a nice bonus for a single talent point, but not good enough to warrant skipping other talents. With so many good talents to put points in instead, a mediocre talent like this just doesn’t cut it.
(YES) Impale: With all the +crit talents in the Prot tree, speccing to Impale has become a very serious option for tanks. Point for point this provides a bigger TPS boost than Cruelty.
I personally will be using this talent build once I hit 80. It is a build to maximize threat and survivability, perhaps leaning towards survivability.
Single Target Tanking
So here is your rotation to single target tanking. It’s very simple, but more complicated than TBC.
At start: Dev, Dev, Rev, SS, Dev, Dev, Dev
After that: It isn’t so much a rotation as knowing what abilities to use. This is the order of priority.
1. Shield Slam with Sword and Board up
2. Revenge
3. Shield Slam
4. Concussion Blow
5. Shockwave
6. Devastate
You should be using Heroic Strike at ~30+ rage.
Glyphs?
Well right now for TBC I’m using the Glyph of Revenge and some other bad Glyph.
When WotLK is released, I recommend the following Major Glyphs (in that order):
Glyph of Blocking (After you use Shield Slam your Block Value is increased by 10% for 10 seconds)
Glyph of Devastate (Devastate applies two charges of Sunder Armor)
Glyph of Revenge (When you use Revenge your next Heroic Strike costs 0 rage)
Glyph of Sunder Armor (Your Sunder Armor affects a second nearby target)
And Minor Glyphs:
Glyph of Charge (Increases the range of Charge by 5 yards)
Glyph of Thunder Clap (Increases the radius of Thunder Clap by 2 yards)
Glyph of Mocking Blow (+25% damage on Mocking Blow)
With the Glyph of Devastate you have to use Devastate less at the beginning of the fight making your rotation closer to this:
Dev, Dev, Rev, SS, Dev
Things to remember:
-Taunt has a 20 yard range
-Mocking Blow can be used in Defensive Stance
-Shield Wall has a 5 minute cooldown
-Only to use Devastate when all else is on Cooldown or you need to refresh the Sunder Armor duration.
Multi Target Tanking
Here is where most Warriors tend to fail. But not to worry, with Shockwave as our 51 point talent, tanking multiple mobs is super easy. I’ll run you through your typical pull.
Tell your DPS to not attack until all the mobs are clustered around you.
Pick a nice, close spot out of LOS of the mobs you are pulling.
Use Bloodrage then pull the pack of mobs you are going to tank
Run into your little corner, making sure to have your back to the wall.
When the first mob reaches you, get off a quick Devastate on him for a bit of threat
When the other mobs reach you, try to get them all in front of you and use Shockwave.
Thunder Clap then Demo Shout
Use Shield Block and Berserker Rage and proceed to tab target while cleaving and using your normal rotation.
If all went well you should have many mobs stuck to you like glue. Good job, don’t forget to tell your group that they did perfectly.
In order, your best multi mob threat moves are
1) Shockwave
2) Thunder Clap
3) Cleave
Don’t forget to use tab to target different mobs and use Shield Slam, Revenge and Devastate on mobs too.
If you don’t feel confident doing this, you can also pull using Crowd Control. If you have a Hunter trapping a mob, try to pull the pack of mobs away from his trap so he has room to maneuver the mob around. Always make sure your AOE threat moves aren’t hitting the CC.
On a Crowd Control pull, make sure you pull first – using your bow/gun/thrown or using a Hunter to misdirect – and then have your group apply the CC later. Try to give Hunters melee mobs that don’t hit too hard, give Mages caster mobs that they can easily Sheep from a distance, give Druids melee mobs to root, etc.
If you don’t know what types of mobs to give what class, just ask them. It’s always best to ask, then they can’t tell you to give them another if they fail.
Tanking – Itemization and Gearing
In WotLK Blizzard drastically changed avoidance and the way Warriors gear for threat. Now for threat, Warriors can get Expertise, Strength and Hit.
Avoidance now suffers from diminishing returns. This means that you won’t be seeing the insane amounts of avoidance that T6 tanks have right now.
Basically, these diminishing returns can be thought of like this (obviously never going to happen, but it’s a simple example): Let’s say you have 0% Dodge chance to start with. Impossible, I know, but it makes it easy to explain. Now you get 100 Dodge Rating, which magically puts you on 50% Dodge. If you get another 100 Dodge Rating, it won’t be as effective because of the diminishing returns. Instead, this will put you on 75% Dodge. Another 100 Dodge Rating will put you on 87.5% Dodge. These are not the actual rates but it shows the principle so you know what’s going on. The more Dodge Rating you get, the less each point of rating contributes to your actual Dodge chance.
All this will ensure that tanks won’t be so over geared. Once you start getting so much avoidance, gemming and enchanting for more won’t give you as large a benefit, allowing you to gem/enchant for threat as opposed to survivability.
Basically, all you need to know is that Strength is now a good stat for Warriors. 2 Strength = 1 Block Value now.
Also, some more stuff.
Parry > Dodge. You get less % per rating from Parry, but when you Parry the speed of you next attack is increased by ~40%. However, you cannot Parry attacks from the back, you can only Dodge or be missed. That’s one of the reasons you should keep mobs in front of you. Also so you can Shockwave them.
Arms and Fury
These are just some musings and talent builds I’ve thrown together. Like I said, these specs don’t interest me too much so this section is a little muddled up.
Fury DPS rotation: Spam Bloodthirst and Whirlwind, use Heroic Strike when you need to rage dump (often).
Arms DPS rotation: Mortal Strike, Rend, Bladestorm. Use Overpower when it’s up and Execute on Sudden Death
Fury PvP: Same thing, use Heroic Justice when you need to close in again, use Intercept when it’s available and don’t take unneeded damage.
Arms PvP: FFS it hasn’t changed that much. Intercept, Hamstring, Bladestorm. Try to keep rend up, that extra damage is useful. Spell Reflect those cool spells that the other classes don’t want to. Oh, and Overpower
Really, Arms and Fury are basically the same they were in TBC with minor changes to spec and play style. With Titan’s Grip you need to watch your rage more, with Arms you need to use Rend and Overpower more.
You still enchant/gem/gear for strength. I won’t go into the math on critical strike rating conversions and diminishing returns. Suffice to say that AP is still the best.

Conclusion
My conclusion is that there isn’t much else to say. Not much other than protection has changed in WotLK. I’d just like to say that I wrote this guide out of boredom and because I kind of enjoy it. That and somebody had to put down some kind of real information about Warriors on MMOwned.
I wish you all the best of luck in all your endeavors, World of Warcraft related or not.
