Introduction
Start with 1000 gold… just kidding … sort of. First of all what is a twink? Simply, in this article, it is a toon geared for Warsong Gulch (WSG) at level 19 with all the best gear AND with high level enchants.
Why Twink a toon?
Because it is fun.
If you have been in WSG with an untwinked toon and you got pwned (owned) and you want to build a twink so you can rule single handedly and you want everyone to see your name at the top of the stat sheet, then in my opinion, you are starting off with the wrong idea of what twinking is all about. The real reason you should build a twink is to help your team capture the flag, and gain reputation with either the Silverwing Sentinels or the Horde’s Outrunners.
Getting the best gear
There are several ways to obtain the best gear for your twink. You get the best gear either by buying it on the Auction House, farming for it, or doing quests that reward you with the gear you want. Additionally you can get a medallion, a ring, and weapons that will help you in WSG by gaining honor and medals by playing. Please, save yourself some time and others grief - don’t make your main goal in WSG to farm HKs, farm flag caps or get your HKs from preventing others from stealing your flag. You will come to this realization eventually. Be smart; do it now.The insignia helps you to get out of many confining situations like being sheeped or iced. The medallion, ring, and weapons we mentioned can be obtained by becoming honored or revered with your faction. When you gain enough reputation which increases with flag captures you will be allowed to purchase these items that have great stats for around 2 to 3 gold. When you become revered you can buy choice weapons, all with primo stats.
Twinking is expensive
Twinking is expensive and in the present situation (summer of 2006) buying twink gear and having them enchanted is costly. Keeping the toon supplied with consumable potions and aids is also expensive. Be prepared for it. Don’t try to twink a toon if you are not going to go all out. The term Budget Twink is a misnomer. Most twinkers have a high level main to support their twink. With a high level toon you can trade off helping a friend twink and run quests and instances together. This is a popular method and one I recommend. However, I will offer suggestions for the poor twinker with no main just in case a reader finds himself in that situation.
Deciding to twink
Twinking a toon at level 19 is harder than other levels because there seems to be more required BOP items and there is, of course, fewer levels to obtain everything. If you are level 17 when you decide to twink, it is too late. Start over, roll a new toon, or take this toon on to 29. It is too late to get all the good stuff, though it is possible to have a decent toon for WSG if you have help. However, you will always be dissatisfied when you find yourself getting pwnd by a level 19 toon that is fully twinked-out and you are not. Even fully twinked-out, you will get pwnd by an excellent player. There is always someone better, smarter, faster, and cleverer than we are. When you enter Warsong Gulch, leave your ego at the door.
Reason for this guide
I write this guide partly for myself and partly to share my experiences to the end that in the future it may help both of us to save some time while twinking a toon and to avoid abortions. Your toon is a fetus or better a ‘feedus’ until it has all the best gear and enchants.I presently have or am working on…too many fetuses (this is not a good idea). If you have twinked a toon before this guide may not help you. This guide will only lightly cover what a twink is.
Don’t twink alone if at all possible
As you can guess, it is really tough if not impossible trying to twink alone; you need friends and/or you need a guild to help you. If you don’t have a friend, then join a guild.
Don’t join a guild expecting them to give you gold to twink. Do not ask for gold to help you twink. Do join a guild expecting to contribute something to what the guild is about. Lending/ borrowing money in-game sucks like it does in real life. Guilds who invest in your future deserve a pay back; stick with them and support their goals.
How to use this guide
Read the guide through once before you start your toon skipping the classes that don’t apply to you. Then as you begin leveling up, read each section by level to see what you need to do for that level. If you have read all the material once, then when you go back to a section hopefully all you need to read is the To Do list. Most of the items in the To Do lists are delineated in the text below it.
Plan your toon
Now that that is out of the way let’s get down to business. I assume you have already decided on a faction (Horde/Alliance) and a class. Even before you start your toon, read the forums and determine what gear you will want to have on your twink. I use http://wow.allakhazam.com/forum.html?cat=107 as a general learn-your-class forum. The mind set there is generally level 60 (pre expansion). I also really like http://www.battlegroundforums.com/forum/index.php . This forum is dedicated to twinks and I really like to see what other twinks have to say.
Use Microsoft Word, an Excel spread sheet or Notepad but put down your toon’s slots, like: head, neck, shoulder… etc. or cut and past one of the samples I have provide below. In fact, past it twice and put up a heading above the second one called ‘Shopping list’. In the upper list write down all the stuff you currently have. In the Shopping list put down all the stuff you want, whether it is BOP or BOE, and where to get it.
to check out each piece of gear for their stats and + values.
The terms BOP and BOE stand for:
BOP = Bind on Pickup. It is a random drop and you have to be there to pick up the item. You will get XP when the mob is killed unless you are dead.
BOE = Bind on Equip. They bind when you put them on. You can buy these items from the Auction House and will not get XP from buying it or putting it on.
Quest = It is BOP, but you are guaranteed to get the item by finishing the quest or series of quests one time.
HTF = Hard to find items on the auction house. You may have to buy the alternate item first while you wait for your desired item to show up on the AH. This may vary by server and some items may be HTF and I have not discovered it yet and marked it as such.
Tools to help you see which gear is best for you
This part is very important. Each class can tune their toon differently especially casters. When you decide what you want to do like adding +Healing or +Damage gear and my suggestion shows more than one alternative, then go to http://ctprofiles.net/ and create a character and load one set of suggested gear. This web site will allow you to swap gear in and out and will show you the stat changes. So, you can watch your total health and your Intellect or Stamina change or what ever you are focusing on and you will be able to determine what the best gear set is for you. I often get surprised when I like the stats on one piece of gear and find out another piece really is better for me.
