this does work. it just recently happened to me because of a failed credit card payment because i used a prepaid credit card
First off, this requires you to have access to the e-mail address on the account.
A while ago, my account was scammed from me, by letting a guy login and see if there my characters actually existed, the only thing was i thought i knew the SQ&A, but nfortunately i didnt. But w/e...
A few weeks ago, since the account is still attached to my E-MAil, the guy had **tried**to put a payment on the account, but for some reason it had failed, and it had another email after that saying that it had worked...I looked at the one that failed, and saw that it read ....(Dear: Blah Blah)..I was shocked to see that it said the full name on the email, i had already knew the last name on the account and it was correct....
Hope this helps everyone that was given a wrong last name through trade or anything else.!!!!!!

nice find. +rep
so how do you suppose you could get a payment to fail?
enter in a gift card with no money on it...like a pre-paid debit card
Awesomeness!!!
so it has to be a prepaid credit card failure? because i had a paypal failure awhile ago in december and the title said
Dear First Name,
blahblahblah
and that was it =\
Just tried this and dont think it works =/

Chances are Blizzard saw this thread and changed at once this system. It's the most likely thing.
