How to get flagged for rename? Real question; and very interesting find

So in a LFR I came across a player named "NAME1235123" or "PLAYER6263481" I cant recall it precisely but I asked him how that happened and he simply replied that he got flagged for rename and didnt choose to what to rename it to, yet. I wasnt talking to him further at that point.

Now how is that possible? I know that simply naming your toon "Hitlerlove" or whatever will instantly get you flagged, but doesnt that force you on your char-screen to pick an actual name before you are allowed to login? How did this guy pull that off? Really interesting because I love such generic names

Not all names are picked up when creating a new character as we have a few of them on my server with Islam or other words mocking a religion and once enough players report you in regards to an offensive name a wow Gm will review it and make the decision to change your name or not.

Yes and when this change is made, you are forced to name-change in the char selection screen before logging in. How could that player work around that and login wih (example, but it looked similar) all capital and numbers following PLAYER1293115 ?

The question you need to ask yourself is when did the GM rename them. At the beginning of the day, or a while back?
