Vanilla WoW:
You spent UP TO 16 hours a day to get your PvE gear/PvP gear/Epic mount.
BRD anyone?
A full BRD run took about 4-5 hours at a full group of lvl 57s.

WOTLK 3.2:
Free epics while facerolling simple heroics where you can 2shot some of the mobs and it requires NO skill and NO tactics, just zerg, zerg and zerg.
VH anyone?
A full VH run is completed in aboout 17 minutes with a full group of level 77s.

So, math:
Time spent = Gearlevel.
