I like the ideas BUTTT. What if like in D2 you could go to the "Uber" boss levels and at the end you go and fight uber diablo.. could be a CoT instance if you think about it. Lol, just a thought.

Please use Opirity's/Fault's Pics as reference, this only applies to the face on the side of portal (the same one that on the mace aswell)

It is Diablo, not a Pitlord. the way to tell this is:
Pitlord horns a smooth, but Diablo's are rigged just like the face on the portal side.
Diablo's horns start it the top of the head and curve out while going doing, Pitlord horns start around the middle of there head curve down and the begin to curve up.
Also you can make out the crystal in the middle of the forhead as well as the first spikes of the two rows that run down Diablos back
So yeah not trying to flame any of those who said it was a Pitlord, but the original post is right it is the face of
Diablo, Lord of Terror!
