[Project] The holy book of exploration
Hello everyone !
I have a schoolproject to do which has for subject "the game that affected you the most". I intended to do it on World of warcraft.
It's for the "history of video game" class but i asked the teacher about making it about hidden stuff like exploration, model edit, exploits and stuff like that.
He gave me his white card on the chapter about Level design.
The live presentation will be during 2 days for 18 students so i'll have a lot of time and i intend to show them a ton of stuff, live(private servers) or on video.
I'll focus on the changes in the maps or things that didn't make it live and test versions of suff.
So far i'll do :
- WoW Alpha : dev island, houses, gm island and prison, gilijim, ironforge, planet of apes reference, azshara portal and crater, behind ahn qiraj : weird stones and stuff, pictures of the evolution (http://ikjsldkjfslkjfl.free.fr/mmowaq/), help mountains
- Firelands2
- Emerald dream
- Old outlands : deadmines and the true old one
- Karazhan crypts, alpha and gryphons smiley
- HELP moutains
- Hyjal uninstanced
- Craig test
- Maelstrom (thrall)
- Blue walls, pink/white boxes, naked human models for the size, ...
- The unreleased stormwind instance
- Darkspear village
- Fog : Culling of stratholme
- Black morass : old hillsbrad testing area
- Developer playground in northrend and silithus
- inside dalaran bubble before the crater
- Underwater city west to tanaris
- Island out of the borders south to silithus
- Old ironforge
- Greymane wall
- WKM and Koitar (?) old tomb
- Troll village behind karazhan zul gurub test (?)
- untextured necropolis in stratholme
- Old world before cataclysm big empty spaces
- Outside deepholm and the differences with the beta version
- Quel'thalas
- I'll show stuff from and write about the dopefish movie (black morass tower), oothe, across the horizon (developement, azjol nerub, kalidar), abyssal maw the movie, wandering of an explorer, strangletusk's titans gears compilation and #nogg-aholic: Why WoW is a bad game, reason #8
- I don't know who found it but i'll show the video from the written stuff outside temple of jade (?)
- Otherworld
- KotS raid on gm island
- The reversed mountain
- Stuff listed in the MPQs that we haven't explored yet
- Undermine
- Mirrored version of karazhan/Kul tiras/ deathwing lair/various islands
- The maps in the globes of ulduar showing the cataclysm (and pandaria ?)
- The TWO moons of azeroth
- Azeroth from black temple
- The green smokes of hyjal
- Quests avaliable when dead only
- Naxxramas : what happenned if you dc'ed in nax before wotlk, the portal under the map and all the theories regarding that
- Darkmoon fair spawning randomly (need help for that !)
- Bengal tiger : the mount you could supposedly buy in the cavern south to zul'gurub
- northrend testing area
i'll keep editing this list.
I'll make a light pdf version online and i'll try to capture the video from the live presentation in the class. I'll post links to that in this thread when done.
Would you guys have any ideas of stuff i could add to the list ? There's also a section about easter eggs.
Thank you, i hope you'll like it !
Note : This school project will most likely be a base for an even longer "book" about these kind of things. I read way too much websites about world of warcraft and i want to compile that knowledge in a single place. I will also give a link to that but it will take time..
Thank you for the underlined lines ^^

What about fog in instances? It's getting real trendy in scenarios lately... Also, very very interesting project you got going here. This could easily be worth a sticky IMO.
+rep to give it a start! Looking forward to this.

Not to get too off-topic... but when did this fog really start to be implemented in WoW? I know I see it outside all of the scenarios now... but I was watching Teryaki's recent Culling of Stratholme video when I noticed it there too. I've seen it there before obviously... but it was the first time I wondered to myself, "when did Blizzard start with that fog outside of the borders crap?" Was CoS the first time we saw it?

Wasn't there a fog already in the weird zone in black morass ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuE0ZU-odfU 5'40 might have been added after Cot4
Edit :
I need info !
If you remember, there used to be a time when the darkmoon faire was spawning weirdly. I don't recall much from it, i don't know if it was you spawning it or doing stuff to see it or if it just spawned in the ocean. I would like videos if you have !

Yep I'm sure that there was fog in CoS in wotlk, and that was it's first appearance on live wow.
Edit:
Oh yeah, and this thread seems really interesting! Good luck to you!

You don't wanna miss out of showing Deadmines Secret!
Not sure if you meant it with this "Old outlands : deadmines and the true old one"
But anyway, seems like a fun and cool project!

If you mean the fog we now see in scenarios it was first introduced in TBC with CoT. Trying to escape Old Hillsbrad Foothills made for an unpleasant experience when you were hit by a massive wall of thick fog.

I am still wondering if there is a way to disable the fog somehow from even loading, maybe somehow editing the client or something. Would be a great question to ask in the model editing section or even the memory editing section of the forums.

I have a program, that disables fog. All we need is updated offsets. I'm really noob in reversing.

Sounds like a cool project, but I think the Quel'Thalas region north of Stratholme is missing.

I believe the WoW machinima tools that are used to make videos will completely disable the fog with no problem. I could be wrong though. Need to do some research.
I've vowed to never use 3rd party programs with WoW... but have thought about it once or twice in regards to this damn fog!

I believe they have updated offsets in the bots and programs section, but I probably don't know much more about how to update the program with the offsets.

They don't have offsets that we need. And they have a rule:
DO NOT REQUEST UPDATED OFFSETS!
I PMed TOM_RUS a few days ago, but he hasn't responded yet.

Necroposting a bit ..
The school assignment is done so i can finally start doing what i wanted to do : Sharing my (and others') knowledge about stuff people might not know or have forgotten about the game.
So far, i only have the table of content and some texts (quick notes). Everything is subject to change (edits/removals/additions).
I just started and i plan on spending ~1hour on it every day after work.
