error im getting when i find a realm thats known to the public realmlist

I can see your point and I agree.
However, (this is from personal experience)
when 2.4 was on the PTR, there was a TTR server up, wich people at one time could connect to(this is when my friend X1 connected to it).
after a while, a hotfix came, and the TTR server was removed from the realmlist, although X1 was stil able to connect and play on the server because his WTF files directed him to the server.
at this time I could't see the server on the realmlist (as if it was a hidden realm)
X1 gave me the server name, I wrote it in the WTF file, and tried to connect.

at first I noticed I managed to connect, but I got instantly kicked, but we managed to delay the kick by pressing ESC, and going into character creation.
After I had created an character on the TTR realm I was able to connect to it anytime, without problems.
we tested it on multiple computers, and it had the same pattern everytime.



so, what I was thinking is: maybe the hidden servers are on the normal realmlist, only its not listed, and you dont have a character yet.

but, if its true what you said, that you tried it, and it dind't work, its ok.
Im just trying to contribute with ideas
however I will try it when I come home.

eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com is 80.239.180.114

With a lil bit scanning and luck you can maybe find a logonserver for the hidden servers.

But maybe the hidden servers are on the same logonserver.

blizz obviously deploy firewalls etc they could restrict them at the firewall level

lol actually this is something i was doing ages ago kinda, i never went so far as to get the realm lists, but back prior to TBC when it was still in beta and i had the client and no account, i was trying to use the realm server test page to copy a char to the beta server, it never worked though, not sure what they have changed since to break it as i actually know properly cookie manipulation (TamperData firefox addon makes it easier than javascript:void methods)

anyway, i can tell you this will probably do jack all, as was stated you need a login to the realm which is probably private, second of all its all probably local LAN's so not even on the internets
