Ridiculous latency with locally hosted server

Necessary forewarning: I am a dumb ape. I'm sorry. Networking is beyond me. If nobody is willing or able to give me a simple, relatively moron-proof answer, I respect that.

I've tried several 1.12.1 repacks (to play around with gear setups on various specs) and all of them have unplayable latency despite being hosted on the same machine as the client. Sometimes up to 1300ms, no lower than 600ms. This didn't happen on my previous rig -- running windows 7 instead of windows 8. Does anyone know what the hell is going on? I can't test a damn thing if there's a several second delay on every instant cast.

There should be no latency between the server and client if they are running on the same machine. Perhaps latency appears high because the server cannot process the requests fast enough? As in, you don't have enough hardware capabilities somewhere.

Post the specs of your computer ram cpu ect could help us give you a more pin pointed answer. also try this

    1. Go to the command prompt
    2. On the command prompt type "ping 127.0.0.1" without quotes then press Enter.
3 Now you computrer will start to Ping the lan card by sending packets.
    4. Below that you will see the Ping statistics, this will show if the lan card is responding from the packets that was sent.
    5. If the result is "Packets: Sent=4, Receive=4, Lost=0", this means that it is working.
    6. But if you receive this kind of result "Packets: Sent=4, Receive=0, Lost=4" this means that your lan card is not working and may need to be replaced

this test will help in narrowing this issue network card wise anyway.

Thanks for responding, guys. I ran a ping test. 4 sent, 4 received. 0% lost. So that's out. My hardware is plenty beefy for this, but I'll post it anyway in case it's a known issue with specific components or something:

    Intel Core i7-4720HQ Quad-Core @ 2.60 GHz
    NVIDIA GTX 960M 4GB
512GB Solid State Drive (With server and client on the same partition, if that matters)
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    802.11n network adapter
    Running Windows 8.1

You see why this is frustrating. By all accounts, this shouldn't be happening.

Edit: It should be noted that running the server and client at the same time and actually doing things in-game only utilizes about 4GB of RAM and 16% of my CPU.

hmm. i see no reason for it to bog down like that. Only other thing i can think of might be bad repack or something in the config. which repack are you using i will do some testing for you.

Aye, your specs are more than enough to do this. What's your worldserver console output like?

Sorry it took so long to get back about this. I really do appreciate the assist. Originally, I was using AlterWoW's repack v3.5 -- this is the one that worked fine on my old, less powerful machine but consistently gives me garbage response times now. Always over 1000ms. I've now switched to the Drums of War repack, which seemed like it might run better at first, but quickly took a nosedive into the same horrible performance.

I took a few glances at it, but if something was out of the ordinary, it's very unlikely I'd catch it. My programming knowledge is laughably basic and my WoW emulation knowledge even more so. What sort of oddities should I be looking for? What information is helpful to post here?

Attach/pastebin a copy of the worldserver console output log file. If there is no log file you can usually enable it in the config files. Alternatively post a screenshot of the console window so we can see. It could also be your MySQL server configuration slowing things down, though I doubt it. I'm not really sure at this point what it could be so need more information. What's your system load like? What's your CPU usage, memory usage and you can also usually type something like 'server info' into the console to get worldserver stats. We need to diagnose where the bottleneck is.

"100% Good". Working on finding the worldserver console log though.

    This what you're after friendo?

Edit: Is that grey line something amiss? I'll keep digging for info that might be enlightening.

Gonna cover the basics here, are you connecting to 127.0.0.1 on your client?

Are you using localhost or 127.0.0.1? Shouldn't make a different but 127.0.0.1 guarantees it's connecting locally.

How does your resources look? Call me paranoid, but did you accidentally download a virus?
