Is this even possible? They've removed and locked the cvar to 1.9 now, and it's horrible to play at.

PTR/Beta have this right now. Current beta thread is over 97 pages long without a new answer from Blizzard, so I write to you here if it's possible to create something that unlocks the old cvar or increases the Camera Distance on PTR/Beta

Blizzard explicitly stated, that they have not removed any of the "missing" options from the Interface settings. All of them are going to be accessed from the API only, so the addons devs could implement them, if they like to.

They have cleaned the interface settings into a pathetic noobs-friendly GUI, indeed.

Not quite, the CameraDistanceMax is limited to 1.89 (hard limit by the game) and can only be changed via the slider ingame (Interface - Camera) since they've removed the cvar in it's entirety.

EWT (EWT - Easy WoW Toolbox - Fishing, Farming, Hacks, Morpher, LUA Unlocker and more!) has a No Zoom Limit hack.

I'm not sure yet if you can use the API or some setting to increase the camera distance, but I'm afraid extending this will only be possible with a certain client hack.

All those machinima tools have been doing this since the very beginning, I doubt very much their back-end will change so it should still be possible.
