Al-Qaeda leader Bin Laden 'dead'

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces in Pakistan, President Barack Obama has said.

The al-Qaeda leader was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Mr Obama said after "a firefight", US forces took possession of his body.

Bin Laden was accused of being behind a number of atrocities, including the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001.

He was top of the US "most wanted" list.

Mr Obama said it was "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al-Qaeda".

The US has put its embassies around the world on alert, warning Americans of the possibility of al-Qaeda reprisal attacks for Bin Laden's killing.

Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, chanting "USA, USA" after the news emerged.

idk.. Obama is coming up for reelection and all of a sudden Usama is dead? I believe Usama has BEEN dead, war is profitable, why would the suits in D.C. want this to end? I believe they just stretched the truth until this reelection, or for whatever reason. Again, my opinion.

I just don't see how releasing it now instead of closer to elections would be seen as smart from that point of view at all, let alone the fact that if he really was dead for a while someone would have said something seeing as the press was on this before Obama even made his speech. And we've spent more on this war (I don't know about every war, but at the very least this one) than we've gained at all.

On top of that Usama's last tape was talking about ruining American politics and our economy, so hell if anything, he died with a smile on his face cause he achieved what he wanted. Usama won the war, but we won the battle. It's stupid because the U.S. can be so arrogant, chanting "U S A, U S A" on Ground Zero, and people didn't want a mosque there, this country is just prejudice as ****. We aren't a judeo-christian nation, that's what we were breaking off from England from. Anyway..

I agree on OBL probably being happy about the current state of the US, however I don't think he "won" anything at all. He's dead, and the multiple high ranking officials of Al Qaeda are dead too. That's a pretty big dent in their system. I also agree that there are way too many prejudice people in the US, especially when it comes to muslims but I definitely see this as a victory, even if it doesn't mean the end of anything.

The first one was an interesting read, however I don't see how a blog from an anonymous internet user should be highlighted and believed over official and trained journalists who are required to cite sources and face much bigger issues for faulty information (not saying that stuff is untrue, just that some of it is likely filled with holes) and even so, that would not make Al Qaeda's actions after that any less terrible.

Its never right to celebrate the death of another human being, but it is certainly good to see a hate mongerer like Osama removed from power. Hopefully the United States image of Islam will turn from terrorists and men of hatred like Osama and turn to the protestors in egypt in libia who are fighting for peace, equality, and democracy.
