Hey folks. Well, as some of you may or may not know, I have been working on a "MAL-alternative" website. I'm very look and it's a lot of work to be done, but today I've just finished a rough preview of the anime/manga page. I haven't tested it much in any browser, this is just a preview. Also note that it may load very slowly, because absolutely no optimization has been done (other than LazyLoading), so please don't worry about that. So if you see flashing hovers (main nav icons) that's because I haven't created sprites yet. Some of the images may appear blurry depending on your browser as well, since I'm scaling them with HTML/CSS (won't be the case with back-end). Ignore it.
Please note that this is mainly a design/usability preview. No links actually work and it has no back-end to it. There are a few things you can click/interact with to see the design functionality for:
- You can click on the anime title at the top of the page to alternative between which is the default the website uses (Death Note / Desu Nōto / デスノート). Trying click デスノート and refreshing if you're confused.
- Hover top area with cover art to show how many episodes you've seen on the bottom of the cover art and click the + - to quickly/easily increase or decrease episode count
- You might notice the colored triangles in the top right corner of the cover arts. These are to quickly differentiate between what you already have on your list and what's you have it set as. Green is Completed, teal is Watching, yellow is On Hold, purple is Plan to Watch, red is Dropped, and magenta is Won't Watch.
- Image thumbnails
- Hover sub nav
- Rating slider
- Main nav icons
- 'Add to stockpile' button
- 'Watch trailer' button
- 'Follow this anime' button
- Recently Watched toggle
- Music button plays music
- You can hover the recommendations anime covers to see the anime info tooltip, the tooltips aren't completed yet and still need work; they don't have collision detection and they appear instantly on hover instead of having a 1 second delay, and some other little issues. Just so you know that's not the standard behavior.
But yeah, that's about it. I know it may not seem like much, but I've actually spent about 2 months working on this 1 page (although this is actually my 4th design attempt, since I ended up not liking the others while working on them). I am pretty satisfied with this design atmosphere and functionality though and think he can become a very good website.
I know it's not the popular "metro" style that's in right now with lots of white space and flat colors, it's more bold and "grungy" but I'm hoping people will still like it regardless, as I do. I tried to go a much more original approach. Don't try to be nice though if you don't like it, be honest and tell me your opinion, because the design isn't for me, it's for you.
As you can probably guess, the website will be very much in line with MAL, in the fact that it will be an anime and manga database website, but the goal here is to increase usability, "fun factor", aesthetics, while maintaining a very high browsing speed--- with a catch that Animanga Stockpile will be much more social focused, in keeping in touch with your anime and manga buddies and being much more involved with each other (if you want of course). Your lists are your "stockpiles."
Even though this is an unstable rough draft, let me know if you see any problems anyway.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing your opinions.
