This is why i love forums, everyone has something to pitch in and in the end you get the full picture, but here is how it actually works.

If an item has 5 affixes that doesn't mean you will see 5 DIFFERENT stats on it, no it means that it has a combination of stats on a single affix spot ( INT STR ) (DEX INT) (ATK_SPD MF) etc. So with a higher MF you end up finding pieces of gear that have more affixes on them, but how those affixes are combined is random and it is the sole factor that defines if the item is going to be awesome or crap. So next time you see an item that has lets say 200 STR on it, know that the reason for that is that 2 or 3 affixes that showed up on that item had STR on it and that is why the combined value is higher.

So to make a long post shorter, you want MF gear because you can influence the number of affixes that can show up on an item with a higher MF gear, but at the same time you can't influence how those affixes are going to be redistributed, it simply doesn't work that way.

Obviously you can influence it. MF gear gives you better chance to get blue stuff instead of dropping a white one. And a higher chance to drop a rare instead of just blue ones and so on... So, with higher amount of MF, in long term you obviously get more stuff with higher amount of affixes.

But it does not work the way you say. Example:
You have 0% MF. The chances to drop magic/rare/leg/set items are not affected - you can drop items that have 2 or 6 affixes.
You have 100% MF. The chances to drop magic/rare/leg/set items are doubled. You can still drop items that have 2 or 6 affixes.
You have 200% MF. The chances to drop magic/rare/leg/set items are tripled. You can STILL drop items that have 2 or 6 affixes.

Simply put, MF gear does NOT change the quality (amount of affixes) of the item. It just gives you a better chance to find better gear (drops are magic or rare instead of white stuff).

Yes, this is how it worked in D2. Where did OP get the idea that higher MF results in higher affixes on dropped items? I've never heard of that before. It just increases your chances of finding a magic / rare / legendary, not the stat rolls of the item.
