Taking Lessons for Horror Video Game Design from Real Life

If you've never played titles like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you're missing out on one of the best gaming experiences in the last decade. I'm a huge fan of horror-themed video games, but I've only found very few that have scared the pants off me. While fear is triggered differently for each individual, I get scared with a lot of atmospheric buildup and suspense. I wouldn't mind if the protagonist never laid eyes on the "monster" haunting the halls of the building, and this is highly-effective, as it allows each individual to interpret the distant threat different than others and juxtapose our own greatest fears onto the situation.

The above video is one in a series of fantastic YouTube videos from the "Lost and Abandoned" online show from SmashTV Canada. The series features a party of urban explorers who break and enter into abandoned factories, mental hospitals, and abandoned mines, braving these locations in the dead of night. It's real life horror, and this asylum episode is by far the scariest of them all. I'd also like to mention that these guys don't get enough views, so throw some their way and subscribe to the channel.

What can we learn from these videos about horror video game design? It certainly teaches us that we can deviate from the traditional model where gore is splattered all over the ruins of an abandoned building. The scariness in this asylum is much more subtle, and the video showcases small pieces of history like old broadcast systems, informational books, and clogged sinks and tubs. It allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions about what may have happened in that environment, and that only magnifies the scariness.

To our loyal readers, what scares you the most in horror video games? Do you think that it's much scarier to wander through an abandoned building with only a flashlight and your wits, or do you prefer to bravely face monsters head-on with a weapon in hand?

Global Supremacy Episode 6: Mists of Pandaria Lore Speculation

It's been awhile since we've had an episode of Global Supremacy here on OwnedCore. Between working on other columns, troubleshooting the Livestream, and plotting behind closed doors, I'm kicking this column back into shape. For those of you who weren't along for the ride before, Global Supremacy is a column specifically dedicated to those who love World of Warcraft's storyline and enjoy a pinch of speculation and analysis. We deal with the presence of real-world political, religious, and philosophical ideas in the World of Warcraft narrative, and analyze it carefully for our readers.

Our last couple of editions focused more specifically on current factions and lore, but this episode will differ vastly from that formula. Today, we'll be taking about World of Warcraft's purported next expansion, the Mists of Pandaria. We've gone from the bladed fortresses of the Burning Legion, to the frozen domain of the Scourge, to the shattered and war-torn Azeroth of post-Cataclysm. Now, it seems like we may be visiting the distant and forgotten land of Pandaria, and perhaps some other locales in the vast, unexplored oceans of Azeroth.

Keep in mind that this is speculation and not fact. We will be using current sources in WoW to attempt to project the future. We won't be dealing with class mechanics or balance issues here, as the only concern we have with the Mists of Pandaria is what we'll be dealing with in terms of the storyline.

Keep in mind that we will be using some of the Warcraft RPG books as a source of extrapolation, but Blizzard did explicitly mention that most of the lore from these sources is now considered irrelevant and inconsistent with the World of Warcraft MMO. Still, they are very careful to mention that the WoW RPG lore could be taken as canon if certain parts of that lore are adapted in game. A perfect example is the Forsaken Lightslayer prestige class, which has appeared to some degree in the World of Warcraft.

Here is Blizzard's official statement regarding the World of Warcraft RPG sources, quoted from the CDEV II:
Originally Posted by Blizzard Entertainment Creative Development Round II Q&A

Blizzard helped generate a great deal of the content within the RPG books, so there will be times when ideas from the RPG will make their way into the game and official lore, but you are much better off considering the RPG books non-canonical unless otherwise stated.
At this point, it is almost completely confirmed that Mists of Pandaria is going to be the next expansion, and also that we'll be seeing the Pandaren in a great number. Blizzard made the point to elaborate on the Pandaren's origins in the latest issue of the Warcraft Official Magazine, stating that the Pandaren's society predates the Night Elves and the Highborne's empire from the seat of Suramar and Zin-Azshari.

So what brings us to Pandaria after the world has been ravaged by Deathwing? Up until now, the Pandaren Empire has given the other mortal races very little interference. The last we've seen or heard from the Pandaren was Shen Stormstout's companionship with Rexxar during the Founding of Durotar. The Pandaren were also once a close ally of the Night Elves, but this alliance ended the moment the Highborne showed the first signs of madness from their demonic rituals and endless search for more magical sources to feed their addiction.

From what we understand, Pandaren society has progressed from a singular empire to a system of clans, or Shao'dins. Each Shao'din is led by an individual Shodo-pan, who is a legendary warrior of his people. In ancient times, the Pandaren Empire was ruled over by a single Shodo-pan who acted as the absolute ruler of the great nation. The vast bamboo forests of Pandaria are host to this intriguing race of scholars, swordsmen, and elementalists.

Interestingly enough, the Pandaren are known to immediately think of any traveler as a potential friend. It does not matter if that traveler follows the darkened path of a Death Knight or even a Warlock. So long as the traveler has done nothing to hurt the Pandaren, he will judged for his actions and for his kindness alone. The Pandaren are thus a contrast to the judgemental and suspicious Night Elves, who have been quick to condemn and punish those who follow a path that their people do not approve of. At the same time, the Night Elves have shown a surprising level of mercy for the Shen'dralar. Like the Worgen, the Shen'dralar may be seen as a direct result of the poor decisions of the past, and this may be the driving force behind the Kaldorei welcoming these indidivuals back into their society. However, as we have heard from Knaak and others, the new WoW novel "Wolfheart" deals with the conflict of reconciling the Shen'dralar Highborne and the Night Elves, leading to a murder of one of the Highborne magi.

The Pandaren race itself is host to poets and artists in great number, and Pandaren society is revered for it's creativity and wisdom. Still, the Pandaren live on Azeroth, which itself is a hostile world torn asunder by bloodshed. Over the last few millenia, Pandaren society has evolved to include a large warrior caste.

Pandaria's earth is known for containing rare gemstones with magical properties. These gems are highly sought after by traders and magicians, but very few have ever left the solitary nation. The Red Dragonflight once believed that gemstones from Pandaria were one of the cures for the corruption of the Sunwell, but M'uru's sacrifice has made any such alchemical pursuits unnecessary.

So what exactly are the "Mists" of Pandaria? Is Blizzard merely attributing this name to a thick fog or mist that hangs around the island, obscuring it from the eyes of sailors and explorers? Pandaria must be well-hidden to have been unseen by the other mortal races for tens of thousands of years, and one could assume that there was some magic or natural phenomenon obscuring it from view. Then again, Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have only recently seen great naval trafic spanning the vast oceans. Could it be that the expansion begins with an unexpected discovery of the Pandarian continent?

The "Mists" could also be sinister in nature. Perhaps the Mists themselves relate to a new threat, such as N'zoth or the Naga. Could it be that Pandaria was nearly destroyed or corrupted by their proximity to the Maelstrom during the Cataclysm? Could the Mists themselves be a living, malevolent source of evil?

Following Blizzard's patten of adding in a new "big bad" for each expansion, who else do we have left on Azeroth? An Old God has never been the focus of an entire expansion, but this could easily change. N'zoth is one possibility in this case, but it is more likely that Blizzard would resurrect Azshara as the main villain of the expansion. She would be the first female "big bad" in the World of Warcraft.

Another possibility is that the elementalists in Pandaria called upon a great mist to surround and protect the island, praying to the water elementals for help. Even more curious is the thought of a Pandarian civil war between the Shodo-pan and their Shao'dins. If Blizzard really wants to play up the Sino-Japanese inspired Pandaren culture, they could definitely create political instability in Pandaria with all of the individual Shao'dins battling for control over the war-torn country. Perhaps Blizzard will not create a unifying villain at all, but this is unlikely.

I would love to see a malevolent Shodo-pan of the Pandaren declaring himself the supreme emperor of the race. Perhaps the escaping Pandaren sail to the Alliance and Horde and beg them for assistance in the war. This could justify two distinct "factions" of the Pandaren fighting eachother on the island. It could be interesting to have two very distinct Pandaren races from different parts of the continent. I would like to see the warlike Pandaren join the Alliance to balance out the factions, while the more peaceful and benevolent Pandaren join the Horde to give the faction another Tauren-like race.

    Question of the Week:
What do you think will happen in the Mists of Pandaria? Leave your comment below! We love speculation.

Mercury of the Glider forums has made one final announcement about the MDY versus Blizzard Entertainment lawsuit that spanned the last couple of years. The monumental case rocked the MMO gaming world and defined the future for bot coders and consumers. This case is especially relevant considering Blizzard Entertainment is also taking legal action against Bossland GmbH in the ongoing Bossland GmbH versus Blizzard Entertainment Honorbuddy/Gatherbuddy lawsuit.

Ocktra was kind enough to provide an update about Glider's company, MDY, written by Michael Donnelly from Glider's official forums.

Originally Posted by Michael "Mercury" Donnelly

I can't go into a ton of detail, but I can say I'm glad to be able to close the book on that particular ugliness and move on with a relatively regular life, even if it means no Glider. I can also divulge that my proposed title for the next WoW expansion, "WoW: Mercury Is A Cool Guy And Needs A Nice Girl Who Also Doesn't Mind Cooking" didn't make it very far.

For Glider customers, this means not much change from where we are now. There was simply no way we could get by Judge Campbell to get Glider back on the market, although we came pretty close. Regardless, there is no point in running forums with no future for Glider.

On Monday, August 22nd, we will be taking down the site and forums. I imagine I'll be around here quite a bit more until then, at least once I get back to Phoenix later today.

Most of the people who have helped out through the years will not see this, but I imagine some folks will cross-post this message on other forums. You have my most sincere appreciation; everyone from OMW to Ocktra and all the others. The community is what made Glider into a true force and I never would have made it this far without you. Losing that through the injunction has been the worst part for me.

I'm not sure what I'll be doing next, but I'm quite certain it won't involve anything to do with Blizzard. Maybe some kind of regular job that doesn't involve a constant barrage of legal and technical attacks. Imagine that.

And, no, I'm not interested in automating Rift unless your job offer includes a hefty starting bonus. Think Ferrari 458-sized.

So long, and thanks for all the cookies.

OwnedCore has long supported Glider and MDY in their lawsuit against Blizzard Entertainment, and MDY (and ocktra) were quick to forward their thanks for years of moral support. Let us only hope that products like Glider and Honorbuddy can be protected from predatory corporate behavior in the future.

World of Warcraft Patch 4.3 Official Release News. Transmogrifier, Deathwing, More!

Blizzard Entertainment just released official news regarding Patch 4.3 and it's features. As blues have said before, Patch 4.3 will be the largest World of Warcraft patch in history in terms of memory. World of Warcraft Patch 4.3 notes include some interesting changes to player character customization features, new Darkmoon Faire games, 3 new 5-man dungeons, the Deathwing raid encounter, and the raid finder, which functions similarly to World of Warcraft's dungeon finder.

Perhaps the most interesting of the new features included in the patch is the Transmogrifier, which gives players the option to swap the models of any two items that they own, so long as the item is the same class of armor or the same type of weapon. This would allow, per se, a character to swap out the model of their current one-handed PvP blade with the item model of [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker], so long as the player owns Thunderfury.

This gives players a whole new dimension of customization, allowing them to tool their armor to fit themes or appearances that are more aesthetically pleasing than the current sets available. The Transmogrifier will no doubt also motivate players to run old dungeons and raids to gain access to new items to swap out the appearance of their current armor sets. You could literally piece any set of "roleplaying" gear together to match your character, and that's a fantastic feature.

Here are Blizzard's official Warcraft Patch 4.3 notes on the Transmogrifier, along with a screenshot of the gear-changing interface and the room in Orgrimmar with the Ethereals who provide Void Storage and Transmogrifier services.

Originally Posted by Blizzard Entertainment Official Patch Update
You’ve been asking for it, and we were listening. In patch 4.3 you’ll be able to customize the appearance of your weapons and armor like never before.

The Ethereals, emerging from the nether, will bring with them a new technology they call Transmogrification. They’re heading to the capital cities of Azeroth to set up shop and to offer adventurers a unique service -- copying the appearance of one magical item onto another. They only ask for a modest gold donation to recoup their costs.

Visiting a Transmogrifier will present players with a new interface that will allow them to change the appearance of an item while retaining its original stats. This means that you can raid in your paladin tier 12 Immolation set, but look like you’re wearing Lightbringer, while priests can bring Benediction back -- at least in spirit. Hunters can once again roam the jungles of Stranglethorn Vale in their tier 2 Dragonstalker set. You could even slip into the saucy tailored Black Mageweave set for that matter. You know, with the thigh highs, and the little gloves, and the cute little… ahem.

Placing an item into the Transmogrifier interface will offer a preview of how the item will appear once the change is applied. However, not all item pairings are compatible with Transmogrification. In general, only items that have stats can be used in the transmogrification process. You must also be able to wear both items when using this service. Ethereals don’t have much in the way of ethics, but allowing someone to appear as if they’re equipping unusable items crosses the line. Similarly, they won’t allow you to change weapon or armor types. Sneaky death knights can’t make that breastplate look like a cloth robe, and you can’t make a one-handed axe look like a two-handed axe, or transform a sword’s appearance into that of a mace. Guns, bows, and crossbows will be the exception to this rule. You will finally be able to retain your dwarf’s racial gun bonus while appearing with all the splendor and elegance of a bow wielder (or at least the relative silence of one).

Placing items into the Transmogrify interface will increase the gold cost of the process, and clicking the Transmogrify button (assuming you have the necessary funds) will put the appearance change into effect. The process can be reversed by clicking the undo icon on each item, and then hitting the Transmogrify button once more to save the changes. Any item that’s transmogrified will have text indicating it’s been altered by the process for all to see, similar to the item tooltip callout for reforged items.

Transmogrification encourages players to hold onto items with sentimental or aesthetic value, and the Ethereals anticipate that personal bag and bank space will be at a premium now that everyone will be hoarding their frilly pantaloons and leather jerkins. In anticipation of this new demand for additional storage space, they’ll be introducing a unique Void Storage service. What’s Void Storage, you ask? We’ll provide more details soon.

We’re looking forward to seeing how players choose to customize their character’s appearance, and hope you’re as excited as we are for the arrival of patch 4.3 and the Transmogrification feature. Do you have a favorite set or weapon that you’ll be bringing back? Let us know in the comments below.

In addition, World of Warcraft Patch 4.3 will feature the raid finder and 3 new 5-man dungeons. The first of the five man dungeons is the Caverns of Time: War of the Ancients, which plunges players back into the annals of time to fight Azshara and her servants alongside Malfurion Stormrage and the Kaldorei resistance. We also have a patch 4.3 exclusive leak here at OwnedCore, with the other two 5-man dungeons available to players in patch 4.3:

    • A new Skywall 5-man dungeon will be released to players with Patch 4.3.
    • A new dungeon related to the storyline of the next expansion will see release with patch 4.3, tying directly into the problems that lead into the next expansion. It is also likely that the Abyssal Maw and N'zoth will be tied-in to the storyline of the hypothetical Mists of Pandaria.

In addition, the details for the final Deathwing raid encounter have been released to WoW news sites across the Internet, including details of the actual final fight's mechanics. Apparently Deathwing's raid:

    • Includes 6-10 new bosses with a focus on "add control" and large-scale fights.
    • A final encounter with Deathwing himself where players are forced to climb on his back and wings to DPS down individual parts of his body. The Deathwing raid encounter will take players on a dangerous flight through Azeroth and it's environs, dipping them in lava, pulling them through bonecutting winds, and diving though Azeroth's expansive forests in a wake of flame.

In addition, World of Warcraft Patch 4.3 notes mention a new Darkmoon Faire island with several new activities, including "Whack-a-Gnome"!

This will no doubt be one of World of Warcraft's most expansive and extensive patches in history, and we'll keep you updated with all the freshest news and latest World of Warcraft patch 4.3 notes.
