Newbie, few questions about tmorph and model editing

I recently found out about tmorph, but since I'm still running with x32 bit OS I was unable to use it. And I remember back during Wrath there was a much easier method to change characters models, but you ended up changing the character model of every other player. For instance you change male undead to male dwarf - every other undead player now looks like a dwarf. I tried looking for that method and eventually using it, but there was nothing. I came back here looked around and what I think that was a model editing and/or character swapping. I saw the post explaining that model editing is probably bannable especially if you use it to abuse or get some sort of a special advantages, which I think its kinda of understandable, since you're supposed to change the game files. But I still want to ask how easy is to detect and if people are getting banned for it, because I'm not looking to abuse the game, fly in BG/arena, get in zones I'm not supposed to or any kind of a BS like that. All I want is to change my character model.
So the other thing that I want to ask where I can look up for explanation/guide on how to change one character model with other.

tl;dr: How easy detectable is model editing when you use it only for one maybe two character models and where I can see a guide on how to do it.

If it's purely cosmetic, chances are high that you won't be banned. Back in the old days you could for example replace campfire model with a staircase model to walk out over the gates in Arathi Basin. For that reason people got banned for ME. But I never saw a case where people got banned when they replaced X model with Y model for cosmetic purposes.

About the current state of ME, that is something I cannot answer since I am currently not active in that scene. Last time ME worked for me was around Wrath expansion, after that it kind of died during Cataclysm I think but I saw some others that achieved doing ME stuff in a later stadium.

My thoughts exactly, that they won't bother looking/dealing with it, because its only cosmetic and if I get banned ... hopefully the ban won't be permanent.
