To wich extent can we mod WoW ?

    Hey guys !
I've always been following the WoW scene on and off since 2007, I'm looking to start a fun project in my free time when I'm not working, nothing too serious but I like to have fun making games.

I want to use the latest Mangos build, WoW client, and try and make a game with it, new races, new classes, new spells, new quests, new raids etc.. this is not an ambitious project, I will be very happy if I can pull off one original zone with one new class and race that has 3 spells at first, I'm making this only for fun.

I already have experience in scripting encounters in Mangos and SQL editing in WoW, I'll use this project to learn even more, even maybe make a small release on the forum if I ever have something interesting to show.

So my question is, how far can we mod WoW without having it go unstable ? By that I mean :

    - Remove all gear and create new ones
    - Remove classes/races from the login screen (Client Edit ?) and add new ones
    - Remove all Achievements and add new ones

etc etc.. what is the limit in the WoW client ? Did anybody work on large scale mods and encounter issues?

    Thanks !

To wich extent can we mod WoW ?

As long as your data is consistently meets the requirements the WoW client has there are no limits!

That makes me think, could a person really make his own game by stripping all unnecessary content to shrink the client size and make a truly new game of his own? Has this ever been attempted?

    Hey there folks,

I'm doing this, I thought about it some more last night and there are some really cool mechanics I never saw in WoW that I would love to see in a huge mod.

I'm gonna start from the 3.3.5 WoW Client, latest Mangos branch for Wotlk and work from there.

For reference, and if anybody is interested , I made a Devblog here : Herion Realms | DevBlog for the MMORPG Herion Realms , the biggest World of Warcraft mod project to date . There's nothing in it for the moment because I haven't done anything yet, I need a clear roadmap and to do some technical tests first but it should be coming in the next couple days, bookmark that URL if you're interested.

I may do a topic on OwnedCore in the modding section whenever I have a small Alpha available, I don't wanna publicize it too much for the moment, again, I'm doing this for fun and it might turn out to be a pile of horseshit.

If you have any idea for mechanisms you would like to see, like you said tmanowen, feel free to reply here.

There is alr 3-4 really big modding projects. They're called: Maruum, Ashbringer, Reign of Ysera and Otherlands. (Otherlands is russian, so you probably won't find it. Max Vellear - YouTube this got some of Otherlands stuff.)

Yes we have still changed gameplay with Maruum. Own classes, races and many other nice things. Also we build a full new world for Maruum.
    Have a look.

Ya it could be done with years worth of time. Adding and changing models is as simple as messing with .wmo files in the mpq's you could suck out what you dont need and add what you do need. You could delete all the maps and everything linked to them then use noggit to make your own, boss scripting, quest creation, item adding etc etc is fairly simple the most difficult part would be re-writing classes or making new ones and new races but the answer is yes if somebody was cracked enough out of their mind and had years to waste they could make WoW a different game given the engine wow runs on
