can you get banned? Is there some way for blizzard to detect that you swapped models because I wanted to do it but not if i get banned.

Changing Blizzard's files in an unorthorized manner is against their Terms of Use and End User License Agreement. Yes Model Editing is technically bannable.

HOWEVER

It is HIGHLY unlikely that you will get caught unless you use Model Editing to somehow give yourself an advantage in gameplay over others (in which case people might notice it and report it)

I am not very clued up when it comes to Model Editing and have never done it myself, however I know it is extremely popular and haven't heart many people at all ever getting banned for it. I'm sure some more members who are more familiar with it will be able to give you their 2 cents as well on this topic.

If you are simply looking to make yourself look like an Undead as a Night Elf, or something along those lines, you will be fine and will not be banned.

What if you wanted to do the thing that everyone says you can get banned for (turning mining/herb nodes into Ragnaros or something)? If you didn't tell anyone, how likely is it that Blizz would find out?

Very.

Read up on warden, although IIRC most of the model checks are on things like battleground flags.

It's client-side, so when it comes to a small change, unless you're running third party software alongside it, or you tell someone, they won't. They don't spontaneously check your models, Warden hasn't done that for a long time. A large models swap such as turning LM flag into a Fel Reaver would stand out, but still not too likely unless someone caught you and reported it.

I play on Mac and as far as I had read, we have no Warden. Does that decrease my chances even further or is it still something they could check? And how would someone catch you? Does turning an Icethorn into a Fel Reaver mean you can gather from further away?

I don't play on a mac, but that doesn't sound right as Warden is something running server-side when you start up the game.

And if you change the dimensions of an object you also change how you can interact with it.

No, you will not be banned for a simple model swap. It has, afaik, never happened.
