A. Choosing Race:

What’s Useful and what’s useless?
Strength and Agility are the least important thing for a mage.
Intellect and stamina are the most important thing for a mage. Other stats are okay, ( spirit , armor, etc.) Stamina increases your health points.
Intellect increases your mana pool and spell critical chance, however, the mage uses fire, frost and arcane for combat, as for healing, only the Draenei will be able to do so.
Anyways, comparing the list, Human Mage isn’t good enough. So for now you have two options, take the gnome for more armor and mana and health or draenei for healing abilities, after you chose your race, enter the world!

C. Getting Gear

CHEST:

*Tree Bark Jacket: Tree Bark Jacket - Items - World of Warcraft
This one is hard to get, but you should either grind for it or check the AH.

*Corsair’s Overshirt: Corsair's Overshirt - Items - World of Warcraft
This item is BoP, so you can’t get it from AH, only get it while being in Deadmines.

Enchantment:

Remember: You can only have one enchant on each item, so choose wisely

E. Strategies and Tactics

Needs:

-Always have 1-5 Healing Potions Healing Potion - Items - World of Warcraft
-Always have 20x Conjured Food and water
-Scrolls: 1-5 Scroll of Intellect Scroll of Intellect - Items - World of Warcraft
1-5 Scroll of Stamina Scroll of Stamina - Items - World of Warcraft
-Optional ( Have Bandages)

Buffs:

Always have Frost Armor, and Arcane Intellect on and let the raid give you buffs too.

Strategies:

-Rush Strategy: Lets say you see an enemy but he doesn’t see you, first keep casting firebolts until he comes to your position, when he heads to you, cast Frostbolt to speed him down, then Fire Blast, cast Frost Nova, go back 3 yards and Frostbolts again.

-Flee Strategy: Lets say your dying and you want to rescue yourself cast Polymorph if your enemy has more than 20% Health, if he has less than 20% health then cast Frost Nova and try to attack him with frost bolts and fire blast. Remember! Don’t use polymorph on low health enemy, because it regenerates his health too fast.
