Welcome everyone to my GDKP guide, some of you may have heard this term before, and wondered what it is.. or perhaps why people do it. Well this guide is only to teach people the methods and the ways of running GDKP runs for your server, what ever that may be. That being said let me define GDKP and give some information on it:
GDKP is essentially DKP (Dragon kill points [a loot system used since the days of everquest where it was created] ) but instead of bidding with dkp, you use gold. Hence GOLD Dragon Kill Points (GDKP). If that doesn't sum it up for you, I don't know how much easier I can put it. So bascially what is done is the group (previously established) takes around 15-17 carriers (all of this will be defined later on) and 10 - 8 buyers. -- Note, this is how we do it in Blood Legion -- anyways, these "buyers" will be the high rollers who wish to spend their money on items. Now, typically these raids are on heroic, so you'll have to view the prerequisites which will be listed below:
Prerequisites: (Carrier) -- the people who "carry" the buyers, and receive a cut of the final gold sum.
-Moderate to advanced skill, and or experience in heroic mode raids.
-Decently geared (this is for 4.3.4 patch, so I'd say around a 405~+ Item level).
-Patience
-Good cooridnation skills
-Some sort of communication software, i.e., vent, teamspeak (lol .. i know), mumble, or preferably Skype.
-Microphone, and ears.
-You can not be a dumb ass.
-Must know each of the fights.
-Must not be greedy.
Prerequisites: (Buyer) -- as previously mentioned, these are the people who use their gold to purchase items.
-Lots of gold.
-Basic knowledge of the fights.
-Patience.
-Good bartering skills would be handy.
-Greed.
This said, now you know what you need. Lets begin with a pro and con list.
Pros:
- It's fun
- The raids are usually more successful than /random raids
- You can make lots of money (even if you didnt buy or need any items)
- You can get items you want and still make a profit
- You have good control over your ability to get items you want (aka by how much you're prepared to pay for them)
- GDKP runs attract geared mains who don't even need the instance, because of their profitability.
- People are unlikely to leave GDKP runs early (You only get your share of the pot if you stay to the end)
- People are compelled to play better, because it's in their personal financial interests (You might get replaced and lose your pot if you're bad)
- You can get gear for your offspec, profession patterns, orbs etc with no "MS>OS" type restrictions
- GDKP runs can be quite self sustaining. Once word gets out how successful GDKP runs can be, better players will start wanting to go. Better players further increase the chances of a better run, and it's an upward spiral from there.
- It's easy to find replacements for people in successfull GDKP runs, even if you only have one boss left to kill.
Cons:
-Time consuming.
-Wrecks your patience at points.
-Attract idiots who think they're Jesus.
-Sometimes, you get ****ed in the end.. but usually not.
Can you see why we prefer to do this?
Here are the basics behind GDKP:
GDKP is essentially a bidding system for gear that drops in much the same way as DKP or EP/GP functions. However, instead of players using points to bid on items they bid with gold. The highest bidder gets the item, the rest of the players in the raid split the gold, so everyone gets something. There is a great historical post over on the Elitist Jerk’s page that gives all the details, it can be found here: GDKP Run Discussion: Spread it to your Server.
GDKP stands for "Gold-DKP". It can also be known by similar names such as "Gold runs", "GKP runs", or "Cash runs".
It was a Korean concept brought to WoW. It's already established and extremely common in some regions, only recently introduced on some servers, yet still completely unheard of on others.
Items which drop in your run are auctioned off in raid chat. The highest bidder receives the item and the gold they pay is added to "The Pot"
Profession Patterns, BoE's, Essences of Destruction, Disenchanted Shards etc are all auctioned off in this manner as well. Basically everything that drops.
"The Pot" keeps growing in value until the end of the run
"The Pot" is split evenly at the end of the run to all 25 players in the raid present when the final boss dies. Everyone gets an equal share.
There is no mainspec > offspec priority, it’s gold which determines who gets what.
tl;dr -- The buyer buys the item, and the money used to buy the item is split among the carriers.
Now, I know many people on here look for gold guides, but they don't ever end up making money from them, as it's the typical buy low sell high, or play the AH, or farm for 500+ hours. Let me tell you, as those do work, they're NOT efficient in any way, and anyone who says otherwise is bullshitting you. I'm not saying this is a guaranteed amount, but I once made over 60,000 gold from one run. It all depends on your buyer(s). Let's say you have 4 85s with all optimal gear, and everything is TOO EASY for you.. Run each of those toons each week in a GDKP run and make around 250k a week off of doing something you were probably going to do anyways. Add this to your usual gold making routine and end up like my toon with 3 gold capped characters. It's a very simple concept..
So you may ask.. "Found!? How would I go about doing this?" I'd say this to you:
If you possess excellent organizational skills and you're able construct your own team go ahead and try that, I won't go into extreme detail on how to do this, HOWEVER I will give you a basic overview.
1. Start by making a post on your realms community forums, at battle.net.
2. Make some macros in game. Let me give you one I would use..
/2 {star} Found's GDKP Run {star} Carrying slots open: x/15 | Buying slots open: x/10. We're looking for people with a 405+ ilvl as carriers, and all buyers MUST make a purchase. For more information visit the forums, or contact me in game, through mail or whisper. Thank you!
3. Spam this macro all the time, if you don't include a time and specific run, you're more likely to get a whisper as people are curious, ultimately making it easier for you to talk with them, and convince them to come.
4. Make sure you're using an addon to track everything, and you MUST make sure you're evenly distributing the gold from the pot.
5. Dedication and perseverance are key, as you want to make sure people keep coming back.
6. KNOW YOUR SHIT! I cannot tell you how many times I've had someone claiming to know what they're doing as a raid leader, and it turns to shit in the end, please know what you're doing.
7. If you want to learn more about making your own gdkp, visit this thread on EJ GDKP Run Discussion: Spread it to your Server - Page 3 - Elitist Jerks
Summary for Raid Leaders
You need to decide what you want your run to achieve before invites go out. Are you trying to make a big-earning GDKP run with a huge pot? Then be agressive about it.
You will want to do something like a "Gear and/or Gold Check". If people dont have either of them, they aren't suitable for an invite.
People should be in your GDKP run for one of two reasons: You want to make LOTS of money, or you want to spend LOTS of money to get gear. Its the raid leaders job to put that together. Dont be shy about this fact, nor hide the fact this is about generating gold. You're not here to just get people an achievement for full clearing!
Before anyone is invited, you might require people to trade you money first in the window (not actually give it to you, just show you) to prove they have the wealth they state. Again this might seem quite personal for those unfamiliar with the concept, but people will do it.
"Ive got a friend boomkin interested who has 100 000 gold eager to come". THATS the sort of player you want to invite. Get him in ASAP! Get in more people like him, give him some equally rich competition! Put him on your friends list and ask him weekly if he'd like to go! Encourage players (nicely) on vent to bid each other up when items drop, "You cant let him have it for that price!" or "That BOE sells for 8000 g on the AH, dont let it go for 3000g!". Watch the money get raked in when the good items drop and people compete for them.
---
You could alternatively make a 'more social GDKP' with more friends/guildies. These people might not spend as much, and the run will generate less gold. It might be more fun to your players and regarded as a weekly social event.
Conclusion:
There are plenty of people on the higher pop realms running these things, and multiple times a week, every week. You're bound to get in to one eventually.
If anyone has ANYTHING to add just let me know and from this point on I will edit with little post scripts adding any more information to this post, to try and benefit everyone involved. -- Thank you for reading.!
p.s. -- Lots of color I know, I'll clean it up soon.
