About tank balance…
New Abilities
Let’s start with the new abilities relevant to druid tanks you will learn while leveling to 85.
Level 81: Thrash - Spell - World of Warcraft - 25 rage - Deals (AP*0.154+243) damage, and causes all targets within 8 yards to bleed for (AP*0.026 + 152*3) damage over 6 sec. 6 sec cooldown.
This will become one of the two abilities with the highest priority when dealing with more than one enemy, the other one being the well-known Swipe. Thrash actually ends up being a good skill to use even if you only have one target, because of its good scaling with attack power.
Level 83: Stampeding Roar - Spell - World of Warcraft - 15 rage/30 energy - The druid roars, increasing all nearby friendly players’ movement speed within 10 yards by 40% for 6 sec. 2mn cooldown.
This is a unique raid tool, albeit a rather bad one in its current state. That ability can be useful on certain encounters, but the short range makes it hard to use effectively and the long cooldown makes it hard to rely on.
Talent Specialization
WoW Talent Calculator - Sigrie
Cookie-cutter spec, almost no choice in the last ten points, contrary to what Blizzard promised us. Actually the only floating point is the last one. There is no alternative spec.
Gameplay
First of all Faerie Fire (Feral) - Spell - World of Warcraft is now a 12% armor reduction debuff much like Sunder Armor - Spell - World of Warcraft, and it is by far the easiest one to apply, so you should try to keep it up at all times on all enemies that live more than around 30 seconds. You can apply three stacks instantly with the talent Feral Aggression - Spell - World of Warcraft, with no cost other than one global cooldown and it has a 5min duration so you do not need to refresh it often.
Continuing on debuffs, Demoralizing Roar - Spell - World of Warcraft is extremely valuable (-10% physical damage taken) on hard hitting mobs and in multi target situations so you should definitely try to keep that one up too.
Those two debuffs are really important ones when it comes to raiding, try not to forget them and use an add-on to keep track of the durations.
Single target
1. Mangle - Spell - World of Warcraft, always use that ability on cooldown/proc
2. Lacerate - Spell - World of Warcraft, one stack only to get the Lacerate dot up (+20% damage on Maul and allows berserk procs)
3. Thrash - Spell - World of Warcraft
4. Pulverize - Spell - World of Warcraft, ONLY use Pulverize with 3 stacks of Lacerate AND if the Pulverize buff is not up/running out
5. Lacerate - Spell - World of Warcraft
The priorities ignore Maul which is still off-GCD, so if rage is not an issue it is recommended to just spam Maul while following the above.
Ever since patch 4.0, our Berserk - Spell - World of Warcraft talent allows Lacerate ticks to reset the cooldown of Mangle. What this means is that you will use Mangle more often than every 6 sec. Once Mangle is on cooldown, make sure you have at least one stack of Lacerate dot up on your target, in order to get the 30% damage buff on Maul as well as allowing the Berserk talent to proc (free Mangle). Your next priority is Thrash, because of its good scaling Thrash comes up surprisingly high on the priority list. After using Thrash, check the duration left on the Pulverize buff (+9% crit) preferably with the help of an add-on. If the Pulverize buff is running out or isn’t up AND you have three stacks of Lacerate dot up then you should use Pulverize. Otherwise, use Lacerate as filler. With Cataclysm’s new dot queuing system (if you clip a dot before its last tick the tick is added to your new dot) , you won’t lose any tick of your Lacerate dot even if you spam Lacerate.
These are the standard priorities at level 85 , but you need to understand that they are dynamic. They will change depending on your attack power mostly. Because of Vengeance - Spell - World of Warcraft, our attack power can vary a lot during boss fights; you can easily go from 10000 AP to 35000 AP in a matter of seconds.
In low-rage situations avoid using Maul on cooldown (30 rage) and if you need even more rage forget about Thrash (25 rage) and use Lacerate instead even if you already have 3 stacks. In extremely-low rage situations (under 15) or if you’re not in melee range, use Faerie Fire (Feral).
About Berserk, our 3 minute cooldown: try to use it right after refreshing the Pulverize buff as well as the timer of Lacerate stack in order to spam Mangle for the whole duration without losing too much on Pulverize/Lacerate stack uptime. If you do it right, you can ignore everything else when Berserk is up and just spam Mangle and Maul.
Multi Target
The multi target priorities are pretty straight forward:
Thrash
Swipe
Mangle + Lacerate on every possible target
Keep both Thrash and Swipe on cooldown. Then use Mangle and Lacerate as much as you can on every possible target. Use and abuse of your Tab key. Thrash has the highest priority and will always be better than Swipe damage and threat wise. Actually, even the initial hit of Thrash alone hits for more than Swipe. That being said Swipe only costs 15 rage so it is a good alternative if you’re too low on rage. For the same reason, these priorities ignore Maul which you should use as soon as it's up providing you have the rage to do it.
Stats
Stat Conversion
The following values are raid-buffed values for a bear:
1 agility = 2.89 AP and a small amount of both crit and dodge
1 strength = 2.89 AP
1 stamina = 17.997 health
1 intellect = 15 mana and a small amount of spell crit
1% dodge = 243.58 agi or 176.71 dodge rating (before diminishing returns)
1% physical crit = 324.85 agi or 179.28 crit rating
1% haste = 128.06 haste rating
1% hit = 120.11 hit rating
1 expertise = 30.03 expertise rating
1 mastery = 179.28 mastery rating
1 armor = 3.28 armor in bear form (with 3/3 thick hide and 2% armor meta gem)
Hit and Expertise cap
To be hit capped with your melee hits and yellow attacks against a raid boss (level 88 ) you need 8% hit or 960.87 hit rating on your gear.
To be expertise soft capped against a raid boss (level 88 ) which means that you reduce your enemy’s chance to dodge to 0% and his parry chance to 7.5% you need 26 expertise or 780.78 expertise rating on your gear.
To be expertise hard capped against a raid boss (level 88 ) which means that you reduce your enemy’s chance to dodge to 0% and his parry chance to 0% you need 56 expertise or 1681.68 expertise rating.
Stat priorities
As you can probably imagine, Stamina is still a very good stat for us, and it now is even better since the more you have the better you Savage Defense - Spell - World of Warcraft shields will be thanks to the new threat mechanic, Vengeance. You will get around 1.8 more attack power per point of stamina with a fully-stacked Vengeance. To put things into perspective, one blue stamina gem (+60 stamina) gives your Savage Defense shields an increase of around 38 on the amount absorbed in an optimal scenario. Sadly that optimal scenario does not happen very often at high levels of health, which means that if you do not often reach the full amount of Vengeance on any given fight, 1 more stamina would only give you more health, nothing else.
Agility is a good all-around stat since it increases threat, avoidance, damage, etc… pretty much everything. Your Savage Defense shields absorb more damage the more agility you have. Generally speaking you want to use agility dps-oriented items in your neck/ring/cloak slots. You will get almost as much dodge as a strength tank-oriented item but you will also get a lot more crit and attack power if you go with the agility item which increases both the uptime of your Savage Defense shields and the amount absorbed by them. Obviously do not use subpar items only to avoid strength items (i.e. do not equip a 333 agility ring over a 346 strength tanking ring).
Also worth mentioning is that you cannot miss Growl - Spell - World of Warcraft anymore, it will always hit. Taking that into account, hit and expertise are not as appealing as they could be. Especially with threat becoming a non-issue once Vengeance starts stacking up. Hit and Expertise also increases the chance for you to proc Savage Defense shields on yellow attacks (see Attack table - WoWWiki - Your guide to the World of Warcraft), simply because if you don’t hit you won’t crit. Expertise rating under the soft cap ranks a lot higher than hit rating though, simply because it reduces both parry and dodge chances (twice as good as hit under the dodge cap).
That being said, with the recent nerfs to our Savage Defense shields (4.0.3a), mastery is not as good as it used to be on the beta (70% of AP and could proc from dot crits). With only 50% chance to proc from a direct attack crit and considering a druid has around 30-40% critical chance (with Pulverize on), the uptime on the Savage Defense Shields is not really high and very RNG-dependant. Therefore our best survival "green" stat is dodge rating. Dodging an attack also indirectly increases the chance you will get a Savage Defense shield on the next incoming attack because you will then have more time to get a critical strike. Critical strike rating is about as good as mastery rating, it simply increases the chance to get a Savage Defense shield (outside of the obvious threat/dps increase).
Reforging
Reforging usually is not an obvious choice. Luckily though, we have a stat that is rather bad as bear which is haste rating. And there is a lot of haste on our tier 11 set, mainly because our tanking gear is just the same as our dps gear. More often than not, survival stats are key for progression raiding, so I would advise you to reforge into dodge first. When choosing which stat to reforge, remove the least beneficial stat in that order: haste rating < hit rating < expertise rating < critical strike rating < mastery rating < dodge rating.
These priorities depend on your current stats, but there is actually a big gap between most of them. Crit, mastery and expertise are all pretty close in value, so if you ever want a bit more threat without sacrificing a lot of survivability you can favor expertise over crit and mastery.
Gearing up
Enchanting
Head: Arcanum of the Earthen Ring - Item - World of Warcraft +90 stamina and +35 dodge rating
Shoulders: Greater Inscription of Unbreakable Quartz - Item - World of Warcraft +75 stamina and +25 dodge rating
Cloak: Enchant Cloak - Protection - Spell - World of Warcraft +250 armor
Chest: Enchant Chest - Greater Stamina - Spell - World of Warcraft +75 stamina
Bracers: Enchant Bracers - Major Stamina - Spell - World of Warcraft +40 stamina
Weapon: Enchant 2H Weapon - Mighty Agility - Spell - World of Warcraft +130 agility
Boots: Enchant Boots - Earthen Vitality - Spell - World of Warcraft +30 stamina and minor run speed increase
Legs: Charscale Leg Armor - Spell - World of Warcraft +145 stamina and +55 agility
Belt: Ebonsteel Belt Buckle - Spell - World of Warcraft +1 prismatic socket
Gloves: Heavy Savage Armor Kit - Spell - World of Warcraft +44 stamina
Gemming
First things first, you need a meta-gem: Austere Shadowspirit Diamond - Spell - World of Warcraft usually will fit your needs with +81 stamina and +2% increased armor value from items. But there is also the Effulgent Shadowspirit Diamond - Spell - World of Warcraft which gives +2% less damage taken from spells instead of the additional armor. Good option if you’re tanking a caster-only mob.
The Austere Shadowspirit Diamond requires at least two yellow gems, which means you will use at least two green gems (yellow/blue gems with stamina). Regal Dream Emerald - Spell - World of Warcraft - 20 dodge rating and 30 stamina is your best bet for survivability. Choose two yellow sockets with good bonuses and put them in. Once that is done, Solid Ocean Sapphire - Spell - World of Warcraft (+60 stamina) everywhere else regardless of socket bonuses.
Glyphing
Prime Glyphs:
Glyph of Mangle - Spell - World of Warcraft - Increases the damage done by Mangle by 10%.
Glyph of Lacerate - Spell - World of Warcraft - Increases the critical strike chance of your Lacerate ability by 5%.
Glyph of Berserk - Spell - World of Warcraft Increases the duration of Berserk by 5 sec.
Major Glyphs:
In no order of importance, it all depends on the situation and you can now switch easily anyway:
Glyph of Maul - Spell - World of Warcraft - Your Maul ability now hits 1 additional target for 50% damage.
Glyph of Rebirth - Spell - World of Warcraft - Players resurrected by Rebirth are returned to life with 100% health.
Glyph of Frenzied Regeneration - Spell - World of Warcraft - While Frenzied Regeneration is active, healing effects on you are 30% more powerful but causes your Frenzied Regeneration to no longer convert rage into health.
Glyph of Faerie Fire - Spell - World of Warcraft - Increases the range of your Faerie Fire and Feral Faerie Fire abilities by 10 yds.
Glyph of Feral Charge - Spell - World of Warcraft - Reduces the cooldown of your Feral Charge (Cat) ability by 2 sec and the cooldown of your Feral Charge (Bear) ability by 1 sec.
Minor Glyphs:
Glyph of Challenging Roar - Spell - World of Warcraft - Reduces the cooldown of your Challenging Roar ability by 30 sec.
Glyph of Dash - Spell - World of Warcraft - Reduces the cooldown of your Dash ability by 20%.
Glyph of Unburdened Rebirth - Spell - World of Warcraft - Your Rebirth spell no longer requires a reagent.
Glyph of Mark of the Wild - Spell - World of Warcraft - Mana cost of your Mark of the Wild is reduced by 50%.
Professions
In Cataclysm, all professions get pretty similar bonuses to what they already had in WotlK. Below is the summary of everything that was known before the beta went down. Some things might change when Cataclysm gets released but most of them will probably stay the same.
Alchemy: You get Mixology - Spell - World of Warcraft which will increase the stamina and agility given by their respective flasks. Keep in mind that you have to learn the recipe before getting the bonus from Mixology. You need 500 Alchemy to learn the stamina flask and 510 to learn the agility flask. Flask of Steelskin gives 300 stamina without Mixology and 420 stamina with. Flask of the Winds gives 300 agility without Mixology and 380 agility with. You also get Flask of Enhancement, which gives 80 agility everywhere you don’t want to use a flask. Last but not least Alchemy also gives you a good 359 epic trinket Lifebound Alchemist Stone - Item - World of Warcraft. This one will give you 440 stamina as well as 213 mastery rating and 10 crit rating. You can craft it at 500 Alchemy and it is rather easy to make.
Leatherworking: Better version of the bracers enchant, gives 195 stamina instead of 40 for the standard version. Same mistake on Blizzard’s side as when WotlK launched. There is no new bracers enchant in Cataclysm except for the 50 dodge/hit/expertise enchant. You gain 155 stamina if you choose to go for the +40 stamina WotlK enchant without Leatherworking. You need 500 Leatherworking to learn the enchant.
Blacksmithing: Two additional sockets on your bracers and your gloves, for a total of 120 stamina.
Enchanting: Two ring enchants for a total of +120 stamina at 475.
Mining: 120 stamina bonus from Toughness.
Inscription: Inscription of the Earth Prince, better shoulder enchant, gives a bonus of 120 stamina at 500.
Jewelcrafting: Three better gems Solid Chimera's Eye - Spell - World of Warcraft that each gives 101 stamina, for a total bonus of 123 stamina at 500. You also get a nice 346 trinket, Figurine - Earthen Guardian, that gives 427 stamina and 1425 dodge for 20 sec on use, 2mn cooldown.
Skinning: Master of Anatomy gives you 80 critical strike rating, or 0.45% crit.
Herbalism: You get an updated version of the Lifeblood - Spell - World of Warcraft spell. 480 haste on use and a small heal on a 2mn cooldown.
Tailoring: Swordguard Embroidery, chance to proc an 1000 Attack Power buff at 500.
Engineering: First you get a nice 359 epic helm, Agile Bio-Optic Killshades, which has 2 cogwheel sockets but no rating stats. Each cogwheel gem gives you 208 rating of your choice between mastery/hit/expertise/crit/dodge/haste. You then get to choose between Rocket boosts or Grounded Plasma Shield as belt enchants. The latter is a shield on use that absorbs around 20k damage on a 5mn cooldown. Lastly you also get a new gloves enchant, Quickflip Deflection Plates, this one gives 1500 armor on use for 12sec, 1mn cooldown.
To sum up: The optimal professions are Leatherworking, Jewelcrafting and Alchemy. Leatherworking has a better passive stamina bonus (155), Jewelcrafting has a really good blue trinket and Alchemy has the Alchemist’s stone trinket. All other professions except Engineering, Tailoring, Skinning and Herbalism are pretty equal and give a solid 120 stamina bonus. Engineering is hard to compare to the others and gives useful tinkers but with the changes made to them in Cataclysm, it has become rather unattractive. Finally Tailoring, Skinning and Herbalism are all useless or next-to useless professions when it comes to raiding with a bear.

With that gear on, you will be sitting at 817 hit rating, you can remove hit rating by reforging to further increase survivability at the cost of threat/dps. You will be at 162 expertise rating or 587 expertise rating below the soft-cap. If you are Alliance, the Liar’s Handwraps are the exalted reputation reward from Wildhammer Clan, Stormbolt Gloves. If you’re an Alchemist use your alchemist stone instead of one of the other two trinkets.

Belt: Wind Stalker Belt - Drop from Conclave of Wind (1st boss of Throne of the four Winds)
Gloves: Stormrider's Grips - Bought with 1650 Valor Points
The two-parts tier 11 set bonus is really bad, 10% more damage on Lacerate dot is just not going to change anything. The four-parts however, has its uses, on some bosses I can see it being almost mandatory. Anyway it’s the first set of the expansion, and usually bonuses are rather underwhelming at that point. The belt is a random-stats item, the best stats you can get are mastery and critical strike.

Buffs
Consumables
For survivability use Skewered Eel, 90 agility and 90 stamina. Use the Flask of Steelskin which will give you 300 stamina. And if you need even more survivability, use an Earthen Potion when needed, 4800 extra armor for 25 sec. Potion of the Tol'vir works just as well if you need more avoidance. You can also use Crocolisk Au Gratin as food buff if you need more threat.
Raid Buffs
When in a raid, make sure you have the following buffs to increase your survivability:
Strength and Agility (Horn of Winter/Battle Shout/Roar of Courage/SoE Totem)
Attack Power (Abomination's Might/Blessing of Might/Trueshot Aura/Unleashed Rage)
Stamina (Power Word: Fortitude/Qiraji Fortitude/Commanding Shout/Blood Pact)
Stats Multiplier (Mark of the Wild/Blessing of Kings/Embrace of the Shale Spider)
Armor (Devotion Aura/Stoneskin Totem)
Physical Damage Reduction (Ancestral Healing/Inspiration)
Addons
Essential Addons:
Buff/Debuff Tracker: In order to track Pulverize uptime, Savage Roar’s duration… or the duration of any important buff/debuff I recommend TellMeWhen - Addons - Curse. While there are other alternatives, Tellmewhen is an easy-to-use add-on and does its job well, not more than needed. You can basically create an icon for any buff/debuff and place it wherever you want on your screen. Most of the buffs/debuffs class are preset to save you some time. Alternatives: PowerAuras, Needtoknow…
Omen: I don’t think I need to introduce Omen Threat Meter - Addons - Curse. Usefull to know where you are on the threat meter
Player frames: Don’t leave your player frame in the top left corner for the love of god (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-a...s.aspx/…)
General Tips
Cooldown staggering: Avoid using all your cooldowns at the same time, their effectiveness will be reduced since damage reductions are multiplicative. For example if you use Survival Instincts at the same time as Barkskin, you will take 1-(0.5*0.8 ) or 60% less damage instead of 70% if it was additive.
Enrage Macro: “/cancelaura Enrage /cast Enrage” - Simple Macro that cancels the Enrage buff that increases damage taken by 10% when you use it, you will lose a bit of rage, but you won’t even notice it. Remember that you have to use the macro twice to remove the buff.
About tank balance…
Druids once were overpowered on the beta, but that is no more. We lost a substantial amount of health and our main “block” mechanic also known as Savage Defense got nerfed into oblivion. So much that stacking dodge rating is now better than stacking mastery to increase survivability. Anyway we are now more in line with the other tanks, we have a passive 12% damage reduction from talents and 17.28% against magical attacks. Death Knights have a static 13.52% while other tanks have a static 10%. As you can see druids are the tank that takes the least magical damage but that is balanced in some way since we don’t have anything else against magical attacks (Death Knights have Anti-Magic Shell - Spell - World of Warcraft, Warriors have Spell Reflection - Spell - World of Warcraft and Paladins can Glyph of Divine Protection - Item - World of Warcraft ). Armor wise we currently have a lot more than other classes. That being said it looks like a bug since Thick Hide’s tooltip reads 33% additional armor in bear form when it actually is about 78% with 3 points (26% per point) EDIT: the armor value has been fixed and is now matching Thick Hide - Spell - World of Warcraft tooltip. As for total health, we have around 10k less than a Death Knight and about the same as Paladins and Warriors in similar gear and with no buffs. Bears usually have more total avoidance compared to other classes, especially since right now it is best to reforge into dodge rather than mastery. You can expect at least 5% more avoidance on a bear and around 36% in best in slot gear.
