nice i like the idea but it seems like it would take a while to monopolize is there any tips for speeding up the process?

I would start cheap. The problem with all monopolies is that you do not have enough resources, aka... "gold" to be able to own ALL or ALMOST all of the market's certain item. Like I started off with netherweave bags, Start off with something rather cheap.
Once you get about 400g capital, start recruiting farmers, or log on, and check the AH every 8 hrs or sth for new deals. The way to control items that are easily 'farmable' is to control the farmers.

I would advise you to get farmers, be friendly, don't be too greedy, and don't expand into other markets if you are still making capital.
Finally, when you want to expand to other items, make sure its mats for that item is plentiful, the item is of high demand. Also, to expand, you need to have enough money to completely buy out the items that are already in the AH, as well as all the mats. Times 1.5

The formulae I use is:

(Cost all items in AH + Cost of all mats for item in AH) * 1.5 = Gold you own

to successfully dominate a market.
