i tried to do something like this. i would put a random gray item in wrapping paper and COD it to a random lvl 60 and write in the letter like i was there friend. i would say something like "here is the Orb of Deception i promised u on your birthday". they would think that i was meaning someone else but still get the item for like 25g+. it didnt work too often but sometimes someone would do it...didnt get banned but i probably could have if someone reported me.

You pay for a specific item, you get that specific item, and if something else comes along, sweet.. You don't pay someone for a variety of items hoping you get a good one.
