Its free to use, cost money to host

Well, this is not the case.

You can set up a Ventrilo server hosted on your home computer for free.
The only drawback of the free server is that it has a cap of 8 people at a time.

I've had my own Vent server for over a year now, I use it mainly for arena, 5 mans and for running online poker tables with my friends.
