First I don't take credit for this guide but have found it useful and its not posted anywhere on mmowned.
For starters you will need vent duh and if you need install help you can refer to http://www.mmowned.com/forums/wow-gu...ilo-guide.html by Steve0
Now that you have done that you will find that volume tends to be problematic between everyone on vent.. not everybody seems to know how to set up their mic perfect for you which is hell especially in 20+ raid groups.
I have found this guide posted on wow forums WoW Forums -> Ventrilo Normalization by Thrux
and here is what the post says so you don't have to click anywhere to get the info. I personally don't care for the wow forums anyway
Vent Normalization makes every bodies voice the exact same volume. In essence, you won't blow your ear's out or have difficulty hearing people.

Here's how:
- Go to Setup
- Enable Direct Sound
- Select the SFX Button
- Select Compressor and click Add.
- Under Compressor Properties use the following settings
- Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
- Attack = 0.01
- Release = Around 500
- Threshold = Around -30
- Ratio = 100
- Pre delay = 4.0
