Hey, MMOwned. Second contributing post here, and like the first one, i'll be covering a Rogue ability. This time, it's the renouned 'Vanish'.
oooOOooo...
Right, if you don't know what vanish is, in lamens terms, "Rouge go poof".
In this 'lil guide i'll be giving tips that myself and a lot of rogues use, but don't put this down as a "for newbie" guide as it'll also cover some of the tips from the experts too.
Let's start with the easy section: PvE
When Vanish should be used:
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you're about to die (duh).
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you want to lose all agro of the mob(s).
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you want to apply another garrotte.
• Solo/Group/Raid - When that pug has just pulled more adds, for the fifth time in a row.
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you're sick of the pug, and you want them to die for being so utterly.. special.
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you really just can't be arsed to fight.
• Solo/Group/Raid - For when you stepped a little too close to that stealth detecting mob.
• Solo/Group/Raid - For when you don't think you can make it out the instance door.
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you're standing on ground that isn't on fire, soon to be set on fire or that doesn't have giant rocks falling from the ceiling overhead (aka, not in any form of AoE).
• Solo/Group/Raid - For when you were totally sure that those mobs weren't linked.
• Solo/Group/Raid - For the crack.
When Vanish should not be used:
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you're standing on ground that is on fire, soon to be set on fire or that has giant rocks falling from the ceiling overhead (aka, in any form of AoE).
• Solo/Group/Raid - When you don't need to. A.k.a. When your threat doesn't exceed the resto druid who is healing less than the fury warrior.
Right. With that malarkey out the way, let's examine the important PvP aspect.
• It breaks all movement impairing effects (with the exception of Dazed).
• It draws your opponent off you, unless you get revealed or you attack again.
• It can be used to 'avoid' (negate) attacks, though it comes at a risk of breaking vanish.
• It shows your undying hate to the warrior who has been corpse camping you by pulling mobs to him, then vanishing and letting him die that way.
• It messes over a Hunter who has just popped BW.
• It seriously messes over a BM Hunter who has just popped BW.
• No, really.
• Lets you go for another opener to that target of yours.
• Gives you the ability to remove yourself from combat, thus, being able to hide, unstealth, eat + restealth.
• Fun, if not lengthly to let a warrior's rage get drained.
• Breaks all channeled effects on you and stops pets from attacking you.
However, there's also a lot of cons to using vanish.
• All Rogues know that it has a tendancy to break due to whatever issues you want to call them, but break unfairly.
• Rogues have been hurled abuse in the past for vanishing in duels, possibly by the same.. specially gifted people.. who pot too.
• A badly used vanish is a wasted cooldown.
• Vanishing tends to make the enemy focus on another target, in many cases, your healbot.
• Vanishing + Moving away can give the enemy valuable time to heal/restealth etc. if left for too long.
But, there is a way to overcome these disadvantages.
• Don't rely on vanish. It's a move, and it's not bug-free. All you can rely on it to do, is break movement impairing effects at best. Don't rely on it for nothing more than that.
• Don't vanish when you don't need to. If you've just blinded an opponent, or if they've just iceblocked or bubbled, run + restealth; don't waste a valuable move.
• When you do vanish, try to keep distance from your enemy before using it. This way, it lowers the chance of it bugging.
• Don't give away your position before you vanish about where you're going to go. When you vanish, change direction or shadowstep so the enemy cannot just bring you straight back out with an AoE.
• Gouge Pets/Close Melee adds before vanishing.
Sorry to cut this slightly short, but i've really got to sleep. I'm not an insomniac. I'll add more tomorrow. Have a nice night,
Bladescope.
