Actually you could, but you'd have to get his SQ/A then. There's somewhere a pretty good guide bout that in this section.

It's worked a few times, I found it works best for people with obscure last names, stating with Z and X etc. You have no idea how many Jones' and Smith's live in the same place.

Yea, if there are multiple possibilities of the last name, you can simply check it.
Create trials containing a last Name of the ones available and try to transfer the character to the trial. If the name is right, there is only a blue box below the things you choose saying that you can't transfer to a trial account or so. If the Name is wrong, there will be a red box next to the trial Account Name you typed in.
