The engine vs anti cheat is an interesting distinction and something that can easily be overlooked by those not in the field, I guess searching for a needle in a haystack doesn't even begin to explain the difficulty.
Went also through my mind there are several ways to detect a bot automatically but since not all bots are banned it is possible they just used some the old ways by a GM looking for them/ player reported them but your are right it is really like looking for a needle in the haystack which would under normal circumstances too much work for an bot developer. The best idea I ever had was when just reactOS would just being finished then I would write my own OS level function where I can read/write memory and use the keyboard and mouse as user and compile my own version of it.
But at the moment it is a cat and mouse game between the developers on both sides.

What I don't understand is why Rebot get perma ban and HB gets 6 months? I've been using both Rebot and HB and recently lost all my accounts. I just made 2 new accounts RaF to test a week ago. So I stopped using Rebot and use HB exclusively on one and the other no botting at all. Just manual play. HB bot got 6 months (first time ever I got temp instead of perma ban). Manual play account still good.

Because HB has a lot more users than ReBot and Blizzard doesn't want to lose them permanently.

Its simply to make $$ on us that bot. we all go out immediately and buy new accounts with real cash.
Blizzard is in a win win situation here with not perma banning , but instead 6 month to 18 month bans to keep up interested, that way we dont just go eff it and leave but at the same time we go out and buy a new account and start over. You watch, they will hit us again in 6 -7 months rinse and repeat..

Hard to say WoW is a slowly sinking ship but that has less to do with the bots or banns then with the fact the game is just old. They could make just WoW 2 but then everyone would quit the current game after it is released. I think they will milk it so long they can , the other option is make it full f2p with an IS but that was already blocked by the player base when blizzard tried it earlier but I'm sure they will try again GW 2 and ESO did it too.
My best guess would be they making wow f2p when the player base drop under a certain number of players 1-2 years later they start develop a new MMORPG.
