[Guide] [How To] [Image Heavy] Get character names already in use via ticket

Hey everyone,

Firstly this is all common knowledge so it is no exploit, trick etc etc.. just many of you won't know that this 'service' exists in WoW and may be surprised to unlock some cool names that you may want

I did search through OC to see if there was a thread on this but I only found it when using google for finding blizzard references to this 'service' so credit to Rayz for already posting a thread on this, it seems to have fallen down the list for around 2 months so I will leave the thread link here but since I already typed this post all up and got my screenshots together I'll post it anyways xD

I'm just trying to be helpful and contribute abit so that perhaps someone else will benefit from the knowledge I've gathered on said topic! Sorry in advance if this was the wrong section.. I wasn't quite sure if this would fit into the Guides section or not.


Step 1: Go to your local wow site so either here for EU realms or here for US realms

Step 2: Search for the name you would like to see if it's already in use or not (chances are if you're doing this it will be in use anyways) we will use Death as an example.



Step 3: So you will get the search results, click on the word characters and filter the levels from low to high as seen in screenshots below. From my experience it's best to go after the lower levels because the criteria for a GM to remove this name from a character seems to be detailed but from what I've seen if the character is on an old inactive trial account then you are almost 100% able to get this name made available. Now my next tip is many people hold names on level 1's as in seen in the screenshot and we can't view them because they aren't level 10+ thus they could be active or inactive, it does no harm to try still to have it made available because most of my attempts have worked. So I like to target names on characters 10+ because who makes a character to hold a name and levels it to level 10+? very few. As seen in my 4th image below here, you want to see that message that the character can't be displayed due to inactivity










Step 4: Grab a few names on characters @ the website that you would like, don't pick level 90's etc because you have no chance... they won't be inactive long enough. Go ingame and make a ticket listing the the name(s), realm(s) and that you would like it made available if possible or if you have a couple that you want .. list them and be nice!! , I've never tried this on the live chat or phone so I can only guide you on tickets. Always make sure you will be on for quite a while if tickets on your side get answered within the day, if not try and check back often for when the ticket gets answered. The important point here is first come, first served.. so if you really really want a name you must be prepared to lose sleep and wait online for the ticket to be answered, I know this is difficult if the tickets are being answered after 2 days etc.. but try and keep active somewhat during the period, there is no point to do this for a name if you won't be around for a few days when making the ticket.. you could actually cost yourself the name and help someone else get a very unique name like Death for 0 effort.

Step 5: Sooo the moment comes, the flashing blue box comes up on your screen that a GM would like to speak if you, inform them of what you want and this is very important --> ANYONE can take the name once it has been made available.. it's not exclusive to you. With that in mind you must be lightning quick when you find out it's been made available, if you are with the GM in chat.. prepare a line of text and have it ready to paste (control + v) into the chat that you will go get the name, brb and could they reopen chat in 1-2 mins. Make sure you are in a place which will provide you instant logout so an Inn or a city etc.


So you see, nothing special but I hope I helped a few of you who didn't know this 'service' was practiced by Blizzard.

In regards to the comment concerning the length of the guide; it is fine that it is a longer guide. It is better to eliminate possibilities of confusion and shows more effort from him. If anything. He could put a TL;DR.
