How long do you stay banned for exploiting?

I'm curious about how long you stay banned for exploiting such as: going under karazhan, under orgrimmar, etc? Is it a 72 hour ban? Permanently? Not talking about game breaking exploits that gives you advantage over players.

You won't get banned unless you take advantage of an exploit against another player and he reports you, or in some other way thats easy noticeable by blizzard. You won't get banned for exploration, as in going under karazhan or orgrimmar.
I got banned a while back for using an exploit in a battelground, so the opponents couldn't kill me when I held the flag. I got banned for 2 hours because a player reported me lol.

under karazhan and other world areas is OK, many of my friends do this just for the fun, But gm island, they got a trigger for that one, just ignore gm island

That is wrong, I went to gm island not week ago and hung there for over 2 hours, no sight of ban.

I can verify this is true. In late Wrath and again mid-Cataclysm some friends and I went to GM Island and started summoning guildies and their friends out there, we were all banned for 2 hours and when we were able to log back in we had been moved. In Wrath, we were moved to a graveyard in Barrens, and in Cataclysm we had been moved to our hearthstone location.

Depends on the exploit really.

I was doing a dungeon a couple of weeks ago when i noticed i had a mail from customer support, checked it and it said id received a warning and to check my email. The email said i had awarning placed on my account for extreme exploitation, using no clips to get under the darkmoon faire arena to loot the chest.

I think i pushed it a bit hopping through 3 high pop realms from underneath and looting them while they were fighting but it only took me a few hours to loot all 12 for the achievement :P I was pretty surprised i didnt get a 72 hour tbh.

Exploiting for exploration => everything allowed, except for going to GM isle. You should forget that place even existed.
Exploiting so you can get achievements/skip bosses/loot things you normally couldn't => definetly bannable.

As far as the length of the ban: I think it depends on the reputation of your account and the level of exploiting you did.
Exploiting something as a Heroic dungeon bossfight so you can get an achievement easier => who the hell cares, probably just a warning.
Finding a way to kill the last boss in the newest raid (currently SoO) on heroic mode with some clever use of game mechanics which glitch the boss so he can't do damage or something => worst case scenario this will be a permanent ban.

And then everything in between,
from getting behind the starting wall in BG's early
or the use of lag macro's.

As for exploiting boss mechanics, the line between an exploit and clever use of game mechanics is somewhat vague, but I think this will help clear some things:
Causing a boss mechanic to not function properly as intended = bannable (Lich King outer platform Rogue bombs bug)
But finding a way to ignore a boss mechanic = poor fight design, can't get banned for that (Twin Valkyrs wall hugging, or Ragnaros HC P3 triangle formation)
