How does wall jumping work?

Technically how is it that jumping in that fashion makes you stick to a wall, what game mechanic is behind it?

all you really do is face the wall at an angle, and jump, there are a couple good guides, I'll find one

as for the actual 'game mechanic' behind it, I'm not really sure O.o I always thought of it as a glitch where it reads you on flat terrain while you're on the wall.

I know how to wall jump I'm actually pretty good at it, just wondering what makes the game think its ok to not slip on such a steep slope.
